Also - drove to Dover to collect the washing machine (whole point of buying this car), chucked it in the boot and it looked tiny - so much so I think it might've fitted in the Golf anyway...

Oooh twin tub ! remember ours lived under the breakfast table and would then be dragged out and put by the kitchen sink ! on the spin cycle it could cover ground pretty quickly and was quite scary ... when you were 4 years old - for some strange reason, after it was replaced with a modern front loader, dad kept it in the seller for years ! was still there when they moved in 1992 - happy memories !

yeah i'm shoving it in that corner in the hopes it won't try to go anywhere - just got to sort the water supply so i don't have to move it to the sink every time i want to use it

Can I ask why? Very inefficient compared to a modern machine.

few reasons:

1) the flat is very small with not great airflow, and the spin dry speed of the twin tub is much faster (max 3000rpm) than that of a front-loading machine, so less drying when hanging up (in theory)

2) much lighter to carry up the stairs as no concrete block inside

3) i hate buying things that i can't figure out how to repair myself

4) also it was very cheap

Valid. Yes, spin speed 2 to 3x higher than a FL. Much higher water consumption though. Respect for re-using & improving.

Very very labour intensive too.  I can remember my mum basically having a whole day every week doing the washing when we were kids.  It was quite a chore.  When mum n dad divorced an automatic was the first thing she bought herself.

Indeed.  I've never used a twin tub, but did have to use our automatic 'as' a twin tub when something went wrong with it -- had to unload mid-cycle into a bowl, manually drain, re-load and then use the computer override to force a spin -- machine is pushing thirty but was top-of-the-range for its time!

Wet clothes are bleeding heavy.  Wet towels, as in utterly saturated items, even more so.

@meowmeow: was traditional to perform the twin tub transfer process with wooden tongs.  My grandfather used to do it.  Parents never had to as were launderette users until they got a proper automatic back in the eighties; father's mother was truly poor so washing day consisted of tub, mangle and twenty Woodbines.  All the best :) .

I think it would be cheaper to buy a washer than 20 cigarettes nowadays!

These two issues should hopefully be offset somewhat by the fact that I'm not on a water meter, and i don't have many clothes...

Yep, i have the tongs somewhere though they're a bit flimsy so may need repairs

Nobody has mentioned the threat that the spin dryer would “rip your arm right off” if you went near it before it had stopped . A threat to my life as real as quicksand and a scorpion sting  when I was a kid in the Black Country, in the 60’s.

If you’re on your own and paying full water rates you are seriously overpaying.  Even with a family of four we were literally saving 50% on normal water rates with a meter.  Now there’s just two of us it’s even cheaper.

My Nan had separate tub machines, a washer and a spinner. The washer had a mangle attachment too.  Just right for little boys fingers….  But I seem to recall the spinner had a lid that operated the switch, so to stop it you had to open the lid, leaving it to slow from full spin speed with the lid open.  Get that past H+S nowadays!!

Aye I remember the little spin thing with a water spout just high enough to get a washing up bowl under it😂 if you just threw things in it would often do a dance around sloshing slippy suds water all over.... But only the once mind 🤬😂

That FB clip had similar but built in with a tap to supply fresh water ❗😯😯

We had a tumble dryer from when I was a little kid until my mam moved out after my dad passed a few years ago.. we had to get it out & away, but it still worked & was used occasionally still.... Don't think it ever got repaired... 😯 Imagine that genZ .... 🙄
