Anorak firmly on - Prima was based on the O Series 1994cc. S Series only came in 1598cc Petrol as fitted to the SD3, later Maestro and Montego.

I suppose that the fact that the drivetrain [Perkins engine, VW gearbox] being non Austin Rover has a great deal to do with why it drives so well...............

Honda gearbox.

Are they? I always thought they were VW.Gawd knows where I picked that up from. Anyway, Dad's got it now, I think they'll "see each other out", bless him.

VW 'box on the petrol ones (not sure about the MG 2.0i and Turbo). Rumour has it that VW knowingly supplied ARG with duff units.

only the 1.3's and 1.6's have the VW box, all 2.0's inc diesel have the Rover/Honda PG1 effort.

This is nonsense.

The very early 1600 MG with the E series engine and twin webers had a VW box too, apparently it has the same ratios as the Golf GTI.

I admit I was wrong with the S series comment. It was indeed the O that the diesel is based on  !

Half-wrong with that one too. Twin Weber lump in the MG 1600 was designated R Series, although it was essentially an E Series. And shite, so bears inclusion here. When I was at school, my German teacher had an MG 1600 which was then new, and we could hear the car farting and detonating all along the lane to our school as we walked in.

He bought a 216 Vitesse after that. STUNNA.

Edited to ad: Sorry Tim, not having a dig, I'm just a Maestro anorak.

Cor! That'd be good. Die grinder might be required for port-matching, but that would fly!
