1974 Avenger, L & B 1600 Sunbeam Ti bottom end, works grp 2 big-valve head, cam and exhaust, twin Strombergs for road-rallying, full tarmac Bilstein suspension. An actual championship-winning road rally car, bought by me in early '87 and posed about in all summer. Eventually ended up wearing twin 40's and terrorising the neighbourhood on a nightly basis. A very very quick car, sadly missed. Even if I did put those Fat Willy's Surf Shack stickers in the windscreen.....dork.

'71 T3 Fasty, a gennie 1600E with Kugelfischer injection. Bought for £200 with a warranted 75k off the only owner on the night of the Great Hurricane in October 1987. Thrashed mercilessly all over the UK for 12 months in all weathers spectating on rallies, and never once let me down despite pissing more oil out of the engine than the Exxon Valdez and consuming a gallon of Four-Star every 20 miles maximum. Sold in late 1988 to a young lad who slammed the living bejesus out of it and ran it round in primer for years. You can date the pic at 1987/88 by the missing VW badge, and the dreadful quality of the 110 camera I took the pic with.

Wow that is lovely. Is there a scientific reason why the Irish love old J-tin so much, or is it just one of those mysteries that'll never be solved?

This is the car I should have kept

Bought it in 2006 for £320 off my mechanic friend.

Did a spot of research on it - first owners were Portsmouth and Sunderland Newspapers based in West London. Then some training agency in Chelsea had it before passing on to private owners.

Wouldn't rev past 5k for some bizarre reason. Scrapped it because of rust issues underneath - could have been saved with a couple of hours of welding time but I was young and foolish and let the scrapman take her away. I put a new bloody windscreen in her a month before the M.o.T.

Miss you lots
