Trip in the light vantastic!

Mrs Doblo the dogs and I are having a road trip. Son is moving from Birmingham to Barrow in Furness. He wants some furniture our daughter left in the house she's vacated to go abroad and we need to clear before it can be rented out. Hired a van from a place we've used before. Last time a SWB Transit Custom did the job, but this time with a 400 mile round trip, we wanted to be sure everything would go in in one go, so paid an extra £25 to go a bit bigger. Ladywas a bit vague about what we'd get and suggested I popped in to have a look. Getting a full fat Transit, MWB and medium roof. Also, its 22 reg, whereas the one I hired a while back was almost 3 years old. Picking it up tomorrow morning at 9.WCPGW?

Of course, you live there, don't you. Lad is on Walney Island. Finally arrived about  6 o'clock this evening. Just had fish and chips. Stopping overnight.

Going for a bigger van was a good call. It's quite a nice thing really. Surprised to find it's RWD. 130 horses. Much better ride than the SWB Custom I hired a while back. Was tempted to put one of the mattresses on the floor and sleep in it last night so I could say I was a "van lifer". "Need to get up in the night for a wee though, and couldn't find a suitable receptacle!

Just got home. Was good to have a chat. Looks a decent place with friendly people. 400 mile round trip. Will fill it up tomorrow and see what empeegees we got. Assuming the filling stations haven't shut as a mark of respect......

All newer Transits have a suitable receptacle,  its behind the flap  just under the fuel filler neck. 😆

Well, took it back in one piece today. Refilled tank with Costco diesel. Think it was actually slightly fuller than when I picked it up. 407 mainly motorway miles. Anybody guess what real mpg we got? Van loaded one way empty on return. I did the driving, few holdups and( mostly) sticking to speed limits. Mrs Doblo would have done better.

An interesting guess from someone who does a lot of miles. Actually 38.6,which I thought was pretty good.Another surprise was when the lady at the hire place told me it had a price of £42500 including VAT.

Thats very good mpg from a bigish van, that price though, £35.5k + vat for a Transit is mental, its not even the 4m one!

I get a constant 42.6 from my 71 plate mwb low roof Transit.. slightly more than my 70 plate swb custom. Mwb high roof did 41.3..

Jeez...occasionally take a shift in a transit procab taxi....its an autobox and returns around 22.4mpg....
