Read the comments, seems a few people there have been involved with banger racing a bit too long and have lost a few braincells......

Simply wear the hair-shirt for the rest of the afternoon and your sins will be forgiven. Still, the last version didn'y include the 'static' report, so that's new content! :)

i don't think that would be in the design mandate.

Er, well I don't think it was what Ford had in mind with the granny either, but my point is it's worrying how little substance the thing has!

Personally I'd rather be in the i10http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3ygYUYia9II'm not one of these people who crap themselves when they get in anything which has less than 5 stars in the NCAP ratings as well as ESP, TC etc etc, but I have to say I do feel a lot safer in my 500 than something older.

We've been here before i think. Sod it, I would rather not have an accident thank you very much. Seen as I spend more time driving than having accidents, I will stick to what I know and like.

Oh I agree completely and tbh I still want an older car even though I know in an accident I'm toast.

A head on is the worst kind of accident.

Your kinetic energy and their kinetic energy has to be disappated/converted.

Hitting a tree or a blast wall is preferable to a head on with another car.

I lost control and was trying to avoid a head-on when this happened.

I went through a line of fence posts sideways, the last one was concrete.

If I had hit the other chap then I reckon we both would have been dead/seriously injured.

And an old Volvo isn't exactly unsafe.

Again I agree but the point still stands that newer cars are safer due to having stiffer bodies
Posted

my body's stiff cos itz has strut braces, bwarrrrr

To be fair I think any FWD car striking a post like the i10 did would have the wheel pushed back and the driveshaft popped out. The problem is most banger drivers dont keep wishbones and driveshafts for i10's in their hiab lorry.

They might like you to think so, but judging by the names they've used, at least 2 of them are only "involved" to the point of watching the racing and being a teenage pain in the ass on various banger racing forums...

You'd think wouldn't you - Mondeos make ridiculously strong bangers.

I disagree - side impacts are worse - a 40mph side impact that just misses the A-pillar is more likely to be fatal than 2 cars moving at 40mph colliding head on. A mate who ran a big scrappies used to get the severe & fatals from the police compound to weigh in - some of the side impact ones were horrific.

Yeah side impacts are scary. My wife actually witnessed a head on accident a couple of years ago. Was about 60 or so mph closing speed and both people walked away. Airbags did their job and although the wife had to yank the door on the Rover 75 that was involved to get it open, the guy inside was alive although very winded and shaken.

All that video proves is that a 5 year old design is better than a 25+ year old design. Things do move on, a Volvo 940 is no less safe today than the day it rolled from the production line. What I want to know is, what happens if a modus hits another modus head on? Does the impact and lack of energy absorbsion cause a rip in the fabric of space-time and create a black hole which zaps the occupants back in time to the age of the dinosaurs? Id take the Volvo everytime, just to be safe.
