Picked up this 405 estate via a colleague, I've had a few of these and like them so when this one was mentioned I couldn't resist.

Not bad for 200 notes TnT till end August, drives ok needs a balljoint an a bush at the front, most do though!

Looks splendid! They don't often have centre caps, do they?

That is both a lateboy and a tidyboy, also sounds quite well-bought, does the GLX have the nice ribbed velour seats from the GTX?

Posted

It was a 2 owner motor, the first owner had all the centre caps, they all departed with the second owner... I think it has different trim from a GTX. I think the GTX is the next model up and has better trim. MC would be the one to ask,he has a GTX.

It's going to receive the later 5 spoke alloys from my broken 405 (centre cap retention guaranteed). Glad they're going to a good home. :)

Yours looks lovely especially for £200.

I think the GLX has semi-bucket seats and the GTX has more 'armchair' efforts.

THe seats in mine aren't ribbed, they are plain grey velour, but it is a late one.

GTX isn't that good a spec really, there are only minor detail differences between it and the GLX.

Do you want some chrome roof rails to set it off?

Give it a rest! I removed it while I still remembered.Nearside inner, correct?

looks tidy that, slowly disappearing here now too are 405's

Good score for two hundred quid! Hopefully it will continue to give good, cheap service.

I'm desperately trying to source a 405 2.0 auto before they all disappear, never fully convinced by the 406. Reckon white really suits your 405 as well. I've got lots of interior/engine bits if there's something missing!

White's good if you look after it, not like mine which ended up with stains and marks all over.

Splendid looking machine. Is it running on cooking oil yet ? 83p a litre still in Tesco's when bought in three litre bottles.

Or 65p/litre when bought from Costco in 20 litre drums. The Bosch pump is definitely a lot more tolerant of veg than the Lucas, but it's not completely infallible. I usually go for a max 50/50 mix (in summer), I did try 75:25 but it made the motor helluva noisy and raised the idle speed from 800 to 1100rpm.They do like to go through balljoints and "P" bushes on the front wishbones. The noise could also be the strut top mounts.Great cars though. With a GLX there is less (i.e. no ABS) to go wrong, too. Give the coolant a good flush and refill (make sure it's bled properly), change the oil every 5k and it should be good to do another 100k. Provided nothing electrical gives up the ghost, of course!Oh, and those type of alloys always lose their centre caps. I drilled a tiny hole into each one and located them with small self-tappers in the end.

^^^ What he said about changing the coolant. They will pop head gaskets if not treated nicely. Cracking motor for the money though! It really is nonsensical that such a useable car can be had for so little outlay. And the turbo ensures a decent turn of speed too.

I quite like the 405, back when they were new Mrs GarethJ had a 406 as a company car and it was ££££ to keep serviced. As cars get older, the 405 will probably be worth more than the 406 just because it's cheaper to keep running.

Oh you've got to search for the hero inside yourself.... as the advert goes :D

It's worth checking the rad too. They tend to silt up or split every 10 years or 100k miles - there's usually a date stamped on the top, next to where the air intake hose snakes over it.What usually happens is irregular coolant changes > furring up of the rad and waterways > rad leak > heater matrix busting > head gasket going pop. The last three usually happen in a pretty short space of time. Also the waterpumps should be done at every cambelt change ideally.Rads aren't expensive but are a faff to change on a DIY basis as the hoses use irritating plastic clips which need the negotiation skills of an anti-terrorist policeman to get removed, and usually break when they come apart anyway. Why Peugeot didn't use Jubilee clips like everyone else is a mystery.Mine has just turned over 197k miles. It's coming up to 17 years old, lots of (non-essential) things don't work like the central locking on the back doors, dashboard bulbs, radio reception etc but it's still supremely comfortable, reliable, economical, rot-free and incredibly practical. I'm committed to keeping it on the road until it completely dies (although it's cost me several times it's worth in repairs already), and what I will replace it with in order to keep that beguiling mix of qualities is anyone's guess...

Radiator's OK on this one,the antifreeze looks fresh, I've had to change a couple of glow plugs as it was a bit rough n smoky on cold start. Soon be on the veg oil though! It's good to be back to an old Pug,I've run them for years. In fact I will need to dust off my 205GTI TD and get that back on the road this year!
