8) This must be the same one I was driving behind along Hastings seafront. They must rack up a few miles in it.

WOW! Another Wartburg on Autoshite-I AM NOT ALONE!!! That one's a hybrid one; the registration number suggests a 1972-3 car, yet the seating, front panel, steering wheel and mirrors suggest a post 1978 one. It might be one of those "Lancastrian" ones, built from a delivery of cars originally destined for Egypt, which eventually ended up on the dockside at Sheerness.I am now taking my anorak to be dry-cleaned....

OH MY GOD!!! Take me outside and beat my naked buttocks with a finely sliced cucumber, this is TOOOOOO much! Yet ANOTHER Wartburg! I am in Autoshite heaven! One of the last ones built before re-unification of the two Germanys brought production to an end, this one featured a 1300cc 4 stroke VW Polo engine. Here's an odd fact for you all; all small VW Polo & Golf engines used in the late 1980's were built by Wartburg factory, earning the GDR valuable foreign exchange and allowing the west Germans to have their engines built for much less then it cost in the west! My anorak's not back from the cleaners yet, but it might be going back there soon! Incidentally, in spite of the DVLA's protestations to the contrary, it's an estate, NOT a saloon!

My mate owns a 353 tourist. I almost bought it and I'm rather glad I didn't as it's been a heap of trouble! Great when it's behaving though and it did manage to drag itself from Herts to the Peak District this weekend without too much trauma. My pal did discover that freewheel is not a benefit when encountering so many hills mind...

NO WAI!How did they put it to the Wartburg factory workers? Did they say it was a DDR design? or maybe that the west needed their superior manufacturing skills?

Strange, but true, believe me! The engines were built under licence by by VEB Eisenach and were then shipped a few miles from Eisenach, over the Iron Curtain to Wolfsburg, where they were fitted to the cars. The engines were marked as "built in Germany", which addressed the problem of precisely where in germany they were built.

I pulled the wrong lever and got the bonnet release instead, the Ost Germans used the same pattern lever for both.I'd say a whole heap of trouble is a bit strong, its had issues certainly but then again so has your 2CV. Committment will see me through.

Ah, hello sir! But I stand by my post. I've owned the 2CV for nine years, and have clocked up 90,000 miles, and have never had to rebuild the engine. Though I did put a different one in for about 8000 miles.Mind you, the 2CV doesn't go ring-ading-ding or make strawberry oil fumes which the marvellous Warty does...

Ooh you fibber, th number of times you've had the heads off it to find the fume smell. I bet you've had the wings off your 2CV more times than I've had the wings off my 'burg, or my Ami come to mention it lol
