106 XSi competition car

Anyone on the beige pages who knows me.... knows that I’m a sucker for small French competition cars...... so..

I found myself a little 1992 106 XSi. Original paint and virtually pin straight.  However it’s got a welded up sunroof needing attention. Converted to hillclimb-sprint car in ‘96, and last used in ‘04. Been in storage for 18 years. Original Northern Ireland registered car with me now being the second officially recorded owner.6A9D8F13-C3A1-4870-BC02-22D51B0945DB.thumb.jpeg.fd20d9ccd3470f6a2ce557c5df86b118.jpegBC81F113-3115-4AED-BBE0-C613144EEC01.thumb.jpeg.b259c7dda5b92dac35c3639b9845304a.jpegD9601541-1CF5-45D9-804A-AE1AF186E1C3.thumb.jpeg.544ad04078cbf41bb7087fa8fc6042b6.jpegC66E5725-6C2D-4DC9-B685-EB40F6797CEC.thumb.jpeg.e69c3c6a4393e17f88d03cf497d7aa1c.jpegD3BF48BC-2C34-406B-8CAA-75A308D63408.thumb.jpeg.a86fc859380510b62674a670632bc27d.jpegC4ED68D4-1B22-450D-A22D-84A9EF5A7DE6.thumb.jpeg.33b29a3a071d31e47ef7c425d0dce2e5.jpeg095E7892-F334-4EC0-AFCF-EF72468DB859.thumb.jpeg.5ae585c60a27d8a1dcbbfc0b7f81c761.jpeg

Rare wee things now, and this one looks like it's fallen through the proverbial timewarp - what a find!

Take it you're going to keep it in competition mode, rather than put it back into roadgoing use?

Hard to believe it's now thirty years old, mind. Great looking cars, and I'm sure it's a hoot to drive.

Timing belt, water pump, fuel pump done. Runs well and is quite potent too!

So by way of update… it ran….. for a while.. then shat itself. Fuel system had deteriorated and began to perish quite badly. Transpires a couple of flushes didn’t cut it… continually gumming and blocking up the injectors. Entire fuel system swapped out with new hoses and fittings throughout, and replacement injectors fitted.

few other tweaks aside, and a small amount of welding, wheels and tyres, brakes, and a few bits and bobs… and having not actually been on the road since 1998… it passed its MOT.

Further to that it’s been used competitively on a clubman rally (lent it to a motoring journalist to do his first budget entry airfield rally) only for the chap to get a third in class!

So a couple of months down the line… clubman events aside. Mrs Faker decided she wanted to do a demonstration rally…F9AB9791-0243-4296-80BE-56C9CCBD32FB.thumb.jpeg.afc92bb2317e85e597867c1454ed7217.jpegCB726802-95E8-4125-85A7-6DA6052E9190.jpeg.aee17f0428557db1ec1dba323995b2ec.jpeg

Love it. A seemingly dumped, scruffy ph1 106 xsi appeared at the side of the road at the entrance to our estate three or four years ago and I lobbed a note under the wiper. Surprisingly, the owner called me a couple of days later and told me the gearbox had blown and the MOT had run out. £800 to me.

At the time it seemed pricey for a shitter. Probably worth the money now owing to their rarity.

Did your wife enjoy her track time in yours?

Aren't 'airfield events' (long, high-speed turns) named "Engine Wreckers" cos oil starvation...with the Geez 🤔

So I’ve been using this thing as a daily driver since October last year! Love the thing!

it’s not exactly practical, seats aren’t the most comfortable, it’s loud… but I love it!

XSi became a van (with a roll-cage) last night 🤣

5x complete wheel assemblies, 5x loose rims, a complete engine…. along with a few other bits and bobs (lamp pod)!

Old girl earns her keep!!
