Interesting shite (but not too shit) saloon car?

Is there such a thing?

Due to a reshuffle at GarethJ towers, it looks like the Peerless will have to go which means I'll be left with the 1987 Polo. While this is a fine car and hasn't let me down even in the deepest snow it's not exactly the last word in excitement.

As it's reliable, adequate for my needs and will probably run for years the sensible thing is obviously to get rid of it  and get something else.

For around a grand, a bit interesting, and errrr, that's about it. I throw the doors open to the might of Autoshite's suggestion machine. My daily commute is only a few miles so I don't need a motorway muncher, I do cart the kids around after school so rear seats no smaller than the Polo please.

Things I like:

Ginetta G26

Peugeot 504 (Yellow headlights FTW!!1!)

I look forward to some of your suggestions :D

That's dead sad Gareth - you've been doing a fine job on the Peerless. Possibly the most hotly anticipated project car on Autoshite.

Anyway, moving on....

Not worth the £995 BIN, but worth a low offer?

It's already been on here I know - but these are very appealing.

EDIT: Sozzlers - I've just spotted that you're after a saloon. Oh well. Here it is anyway.

This - no MOT sadly - but looks tidy enough. TXE - nice spec and a (rare these days) manual too.

What about the Triumph 2000 tc estate for £750 i posted in the ebay thread? Or a Rover SD1?

I don’t really like the look of the later Triumphs, the sixties ones are nice but the 70s facelift doesn’t really do it for me.I’ve had a few mates with Rover SD1s when I was in university and they were mostly unreliable money pits 15 years ago, can’t believe they’d be daily transport now? And I don’t think my budget would stretch to a V8 which is the only one I’d like. The Montego doesn’t set my soul on fire but are they any good really? My dad had 2 Renault 25s when they were reasonably new, and while I loved the futuristic interior and the fantastic stereo, expensive and complicated repairs were always a worry.I have a soft spot for an A60 Farina but they’re only a bit quicker than pushing a piano. Can they go around corners with some attention?

Maestro turdbo dizzler? Surprisingly good fun to drive and don't hang about.

I absolutely don't understand this reputation the 25 seems to have. I have owned 5 of them, my current one for getting on for 5 years. I paid £650 for it and, whilst it's perhaps a little thirsty by today's standards, it costs absolute peanuts to run! The 8 valve 2 litre is just about bullet proof, and even the auto box isn't the nightmare some would have you believe, as long as you change the fluid (and filter) at the right intervals, and use the right kind of fluid. The 12 valve engine has a reputation for eating head gaskets, but I don't know how justified it is, and the V6 is perhaps a bit complex. On the plus side, 25s are a wonderfully comfortable and very reliable daily driver, and they're a handsome old thing as well as having rarity value. Ok, I'll get down off my soap-box now!!:lol:

Agree all the way Dave. In fact - I would rate an 8valve 25 as a pretty good keeper if you want a luxo-barge but not the big garage bills - rugged enough to last and simple enough to work on yourself.Apologies for the minor thread hi-jack

The R25 was good as a comfy cruiser but we've got a Volvo S80 for carrying the family long distances and falling asleep on the motorway. I don't remember them being at their strength for thrashing around roundabouts...?

This looks like a hoot for 1500 Euros. Wonder if it goes?

I've had 2 Alfasud Sprints which were fantastic, but shirely the chance of finding a good one for a grand are zero?

A 504 would be perfect but decent ones are starting to make really strong money now, and there is basically no chance of finding a RHD one.what about this?http://autoshite.commlm/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6138 :D

LHD is no problem, I've had a LHD Beetle and 2 LHD Tatras. leboncoin.fr is my newest bookmark  A Princess doesn't fill me with desire to get out and be seen by the cool cats of Bedfordshire.....

What about this Cortina 1.6L Estate?, at £895 it even give you change to get the things fixed that need doing to it.

In fact this Merc 190E 1.8 doesn't look bad for £500 neither, it's got a fair bit of tax and mot left as well.

Yeah man, if you've got a 'spare' €1000 then you MUST buy a Tagora.I'm considering a 604 buying mission in the summer, but don't know all the complicated bits about importing from France.

Yeh got on that, I don't think it's too complicated, just bring it over and register it, dont think you even need a carte grise. Mr_Bollox will know all the details i'm sure

Just leave the French plates on and drive around in a black and white stripey shirt. If you get pulled over by the police, go "Zut alors! I am on ze holiday!"

When I brought cars from Sweden and Germany it was simple - drive it over on its foreign plates with insurance you've sorted in the UK, then MoT it within a month and register it at the DVLA office.Or you could drive through the Something To Declare channel and say "500 fags and a Talbot Tagora"
