That looks an awful lot like my dad's jimny's radiator after a weekend of mudmaster. We only overheated once that weekend though, when the fan belt broke.

That’ll be next, a good soaking and a gentle jet wash ….

I can confirm, 70mph is achievable without overheating now. However, it’s not recommended without roll bars front n back….. scary. So I’ll stick to 60-65. 
 

A good weekend was had with the 4x4 response lot.

we did some failed hill start training for the newbies. Then in the afternoon a “what3words” orienteering exercise across the whole site. Fun! 
 

first time in a long time I used my tent., wish I’d booked a hotel. 3am saw heavy rainfall. Tent leaked a bit despite having the gazebo over it (which pooled up and over flowed onto the sleeping area.

but the Landrover leaked in as well. Probably should have put the gazebo over the disco.

today was more of a familiarisation for the newbs and a play day for more experienced drivers… the site was easy yesterday in the dry. Much harder today in the wet.

Much harder….. it wouldn’t come up here. And I couldn’t go back down. So I used the new winch.

A little while back I replaced the wheel bearings at the front, to try and cure a crunchy grindy fault. It didn’t. So I replaced the front right drive shaft and stub axle off another front axle I have spare. It cured that problem…… however this weekend, said front right driveshaft started typically “clicking” when turning……as they do….. great!

it performed well over the weekend. So it was treated to a wash…. Very lucky indeed. Then put back into dry storage.

throw some 750's on it....a la defender...loads better in mud

Too narrow for this. Similar size tyres worked well on my 90 county but this has 265 65 16 special tracks for mud flinging. The ATs it’s got on now are for going on the road 🤣

It’s that time of year again. MOT next month so thought I’d better get the mig stick and hammer out.

first up, body mount offside front

that was 3mm thick steel. Had to warm the plate up with the gas axe to get the welder to penetrate.

Yeah more holes. This one wouldn’t fail mot but thought I’d cover it up anyway. Boot floor and rear arches are spongy

Luckily it’s not mine. It’s the end bay at work. Proper dump for a Mercedes main dealer. Boss is nice enough to let me use the workshop for the annual weldathon.

Nice work.

Disco rot is a never ending work in progress, but at least it's all weldable with plenty of repair panels for the trickier bits. A properly sustainable car! 😉

An MOT happened, and with a pack of chocolate hob nobs it passed.

luckily I’d hit it with the welder before Xmas….  900ish miles since last mot. Boy that’s quite a lot for us!!

I went to the 4x4 expo show on Sunday, helping out with the 4x4 response lot. Picked up a new synthetic winch rope. Then I had to buy another fairlead, and some stainless steel Alan key bolts.

the weight difference is intense. The steel cables weigh a ton.

I haven’t yet had chance to try the new rope out but hopefully in the next few weeks I’ll test it out. Need a new snatch block as the old one I bought is for steel cables

met some friends up there. Simon in his discovery has spent thousands on uprated halfshafts, diffs, etc and broke a prop shaft trying to get up there.

I didn’t go too hard at it today. I’ve got a training weekend planned next weekend with the 4x4 response team so I didn’t want to break it. Only broke a seat base 🙄

Another day of off roading. This was supposed to be a training exercise but last minute changes meant it wasn’t going ahead, so it turned into a relaxed day. 
 

there were 3 areas that we were told we’d get stuck in. I tried all 3 and got stuck in 2. 
 

I only dipped my toe in this one and it was soft at the bottom. Once back wheels were off the ground it wouldn’t move.

So my rear diff oil leak got worse. It has started leaving a lovely pool of oil after a drive. 
 

so I bought a new 4 bolt flange kit. It’s possible that the old flange has ripped through the seal.

but after taking the prop off, the 24mm nut is way to tight, so I’ll have to pick my nut buster 3000 up from work tomorrow to gun it off. 
 

while I was there, I spotted a hole in…….the rear chassis ladder frame infront of the fuel tank. That’s not good.

so I did the right thing and went poking. I found more than I bargained for.

No idea how long that’s been in there for, probably years, and now with all the mud and moisture, has rotted the ladder out. Fuck.

More importantly, the diff leak was solved

Took the turd off roading today. 
 

probably the last time it’ll get. before it’s mot runs out and I take it off the road inevitably.

No trees around. So grabbed a defender.

then we spun round and had to go back out to the right of where we are in that picture. 
 

one route was impossible. One route was blocked by a stuck discovery. They told us we couldn’t get through this but because of a tree. They were right. But I’m clever, and formulated a plan to winch the tree off our left side.
