THE GUBBERMINT ALWAYS KNOWS BEST

LOL, sounds like you're having "fun" with it. I'm beginning to wonder whether the creepy ginger kid did put some kind of curse on the car after all...

Indeed, it has an ineffable charm only a shiteist could love.

Mustard mitt, seeing it on the Rallye rimz and just generally fettling it I was wondering if it'd be possible to put a 3.0 V6 in a 305 van.

Cos that'd be a giggle.

A couple of V6 305s were built to go Group 4 rallying. They were canned in favour of the 205 T16 when Group B picked up steam.

The prototype, which was RWD and used the same V6 as your 604, is thought to still exist at Peugeot's private museum at Sochaux.

Ecosse allegedly built a 305 Van with an Mi16 engine, but I can't find any pictures of it.

Sprung out of be this morning ready to crack on with the Herald. Mildly disappointed to find that I'd not only left the keys in the ignition last night, but also the little interior light on, so that meant a couple of hours lost charging it back up. (I would have jumped it, but a combination of shortish leads and the dastardly malaysians putting the Impian battery on the wrong side). In that time I got distracted by the cricket, and then it pissed down all afternoon, so I've not matched yesterdays super-productive day. I did have a good chat with a local elderly (as described in the Grin thread), and I had a bit of a go at sorting the handbrake. Seems the near side does absolutely shit all, the off side just about holds it enough to stop the wheel turning by hand, but that side is binding anyway, so it's just about possible that some fierce adjustment will sort it tomorrow. If so, all I need to do is fettle the windscreen washer into action and she'll be ready to chuck in for an MOT...

Nowt too exciting but after cleaning the Cav twice in the last 72 hours I got round to polishing it before then rain stopped play. Did the outside and started doing the door shuts, tomorrow (weather/time/inconsiderate neighbour parking permitted) I intend to wax it and then valet the interior.

Got some fancy interior cleaner from Brown Brothers earlier so will get cracking with the Karcher machine tomorrow hopefully. I bloody love cleaning cars, very therapeutic(sp?) and it's quite nice day dreaming about who bought the car new and what they though of it etc. Sad as I am I love the shape of some cars (this and the Cortina for example) and enjoy looking at it from all angles admiring the bodywork.

I'm currently throwing my digital camera in the bin for losing my photos of the weekend's trip. Seeing as a thread without photos would be crap here is the outline (with some libary photos).

Two weeks agon we tried to pick up a black Allegro estate from Leeds for Ritchie G but had to abort after a mile as the rear wheel on our LDV 400 had a rather horrible wobble. It turns out that Transit and LDV wheels while close aren't identical and Transit wheels don't fit on the inside wheels of a 400. 45712297.jpg

So that was put off to last weekend, wen we also had to drop off a friend's Allegro in Boston after it's Hydragas leak was fixed here (would have been fixed last week but B&Q only sell 10mm central heating pipe in 10 meter seations at £32.99 a go).

Then on Friday night tonedepear on this very thread asks about transporting a car cheeply from Boston to Sheffield, talk about good timing. So a plan was hatched, sadly the chap holding onto the Herald wasn't there Sunday morning, so the Blue Allegro austin_allegro_blue_1979.jpg

was dropped off at 9AM Saturday morning and then we went to get the Herald. After reversing the trailer through a pretty narrow gap (and holding up traffic, from one direction a massive tractor, the other side an OAP on a mobility scooter!) we arrived, to be greeted by the Herald and a Morris Oxford. Car picked up the chap shows us around, oh and what's that a Nuffield DM4? Rusty, check, runs, check, and it's for sale! So we have pretty much agreed to buy it (3 litres - 45 bhp  ), well we do have a little bit of land that needs looking after. nuffield-dm4.jpg

Ok so Herald loaded and parked at home overnight on the tralier, talk via text to a very excited Tony. Come Sunday a quick blast (as quick as a loaded LDV 400 goes anyway) up he A17, A1 and A57 we drop of the Herald (an actual picture)

a quck glance at the Impian without any noticing and up to Leeds to pick up an Allegro estate in a John Player Special livery (Actual picture) fxw3lg.jpg. At the stop this picture was taken an old Bedford Plaxton Panaroma pulled up, the driver loved it saying it looked like a "Dwarf's Hearse".

EDIT: I forgot, I love my van. Stopped for Diesel for next week (Black Allegro to Crawley, another Allegro from Kent to the Sussex coast then yet another Allegro from the Sussex Coast to home near Wisbech) and noticed a pool of coolant, not hot on the temp gage so slowly drive the five miles home to find a totally rusted through jubiliee clip and antifreeze covering the entire engine bay, but it did it close enough to some that it didn't cause a problem  .

Just collected The Volvo from the garage, complete with a fresh MOT, having passed with only a few minor advisories, mainly the ones that the garage have been advising me on for the past six years. Interestingly, the stone chip in the driver's side headlamp wasn't even mentioned, probably due to my covering it with a piece of proprietary lens repair stuff.

Am I pleased? Damn right I am, especially considering that I submitted the car for inspection without really checking it over beforehand :)

This calls for a celebratory song:

Beats me why Volvo decided to go mental over their 60th anniversary as opposed to their 50th, though. Must be a Swedish thing!

Because the Saab has full service history from new, I relented and paid a local garage to carry out the work. Chuffed that the bill came to a mere £107 and I now have yet another stamp in the service book. So chuffed that I'm now flogging it. OIRO £800 or swapsies!

So, that's all of our cars now for sale, apart from the 2CV.

Been playing with the brakes on the herald today, in between thunder storms and life-threatening hail.

Adjusted one side a bit so it's much better, although the hand brake still does piss-all. Moved onto the other side, which is binding like a bitch so badly needs adjusting (although this side the hand brake actually does something). The adjuster, of course, sheared straight off. Absolute bastard. I'm back to work tomorrow for 4 days. I'll probably just sort the window washer pump, and throw it in for an MOT to see what else it needs before I spend and more time/money on the hand brake.

Shit. My cars seem to have realised that I want to sell them all. First if all, the interior mirror fell off in the Scimitar. Annoying as it's a screw fit, and the screws won't hold. Bugger. It also refused to start today after draining the battery. Has been over a week since it was last driven, but still not impressed - especially as the fuggin' alarm kept going off all the time while I tried to coax some juice into it from my jump pack.

The Saab meanwhile has developed a rather annoying whir from somewhere. Either alternator or a tensioner I reckon. Some thanks for the service its just had! However, the oil change has made the timing chain rattle disappear (hydraulic tensioner) so not all LOSE.

The Mini is behaving though. Perhaps it doesn't realise it's on the cull list yet...

I saw Angry Dicky driving his A55 in Shoebury today when I was test driving The Volvo after a morning of fettling its exhaust system. I only realised it was him after he'd passed me, due to being distracted by loud New Wave music :)

Had a new arrival at work yesterday. A 210bhp, 2.8i Capri turbo convertible, it should be quite a fun drive when it gets back on the road.

I thought it was you! The Volvo looks great.

Thanks! It's very red, isn't it?

I was tempted to do a u-turn at the roundabout and catch up with you, but I had to go and do some shopping at The Royals ;)

Certainly is! All that polishing seems to have paid off :)

Royals? Where's your taste man? Roots Hall market FTW (usually some top tat in the carpark too)

I've been searching for future purchases today, and found TWO Discovery Mpis! Miserable Petrol Injection isn't it? They're bloomin' cheap, and I have a friend with a bodily-ruined Disco V8 running LPG...

But then, surely a feeble 2-litre engine in a two-tonne Landy is the ultimate Autoshite 4x4? Got driven around in one when I was at school. Seem to remember it sounded like a Ford Transit, but was a lot slower.

It could do with another splodge of polish at some point soon, though. I have a bottle of Mer waiting in the wings :)

Being someone who doesn't like to pay over the odds for general stuff and clothing, I generally frequent cheapo shops such as Poundland and Primark, so The Royals is a no-brainer for me. There was a nice K-reg 940 estate on the top deck of the car park today ;)

I need to replace the front and rear discs/pads on the 200.

What brands should I avoid/get?

I want good quality for normal road use, no ragging it round Brands or the like.

I was going for Brembo, but looking around they seem to be the cheapest, are they cheap for a reason?

Finally waved goodbye to the VDP last night as it's winning bidder, an elderly farmer from Sittingbourne who was after an "unusual runabout" finally came to collect it. Only had a quick look round it and listened to the engine then handed the money over, never looked under the bonnet or anything!! He then proceeded to drive it back to Kent with no tax :shock:8)

Glad you've had a painless sale Dan, The buyer of my Escort's just paypal'ed over a £100 deposit for it, Still can't believe that he's travelling over 300 miles from Plymouth to collect it and drive back in it.

Brembo brakes are pretty good Tagora. Loads of very hot cars have full Brembo systems as standard, eg, Jag S Type R.

We used to sell EBC brakes, we fitted the green stuff one's to our Citroen C15 van which improved the brakes no end.

The temp gauge on the Impian has stuck. Got to work this morning and it was still rock bottom, despite the heater blowing nice and hot. Gave it a tap and it moved a bit. So now I have to treat it like an old barometer and tap it relentlessly if I want to know if it's about to boil over. So there's another job for next week. Hmmph.

Cavalier looking hot after another wash and a valet, pictures to follow later.

Potential buyer for the BM let me down, bit of a pita but not overly bothered as not desperate to get rid. I gave it an Italian tune up on the way into work this morning after being tailgated by someone in a Mk5 Astra 2 door.

It's working again now. Bonus.

Have firm interest in the Scimitar, so already thoughts of 'what next' have begun. Would be nice to find a car that I actually want to keep! Still have an eye on that very tasty Cavalier SR, but I suspect it'll go beyond budget given the interest so far. Until the Mini sells though (if ever!) I don't really want something that'll dissolve in the Welsh summer weather. Tricky. That rules out a lot of Autoshite!

I've got a horrible feeling that once I have the cash in my hand, I'll just rush out and buy any old crap. Must. Employ. Discipline.

Posted

I probly missed it, and it'll be way over my possible budget, but what's the score with the Mini? I don't recall seeing a for sale, beyond your sig. >

Posted

Yeah, we're after £2495 for it - a fraction of what the resto cost! Here's the link >>> http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C231361

Tricky asking so much for what is still an undesirable era of Mini. Shouldn't be though. Tweaked A-Series 998cc motor gives epic MPG and has enough power, and you get standard front disc brakes - AND central speedo on this one.

If I had close to £2k I'd be all over that. Hold onto it for 4 or 5 years while I save?

ION, I've booked the herald in for an exploratory MOT on Monday. I know it'll fail on hand brake and washer pump, but may as well see what else it needs now.

Reckon 20 miles each way is acceptable untaxed/tested travel to my tame test centre? The car's insured, obv.
