Just broke down.

Damn. Jag just spluttered to a halt just before a level crossing. Engine revs beautifully, but only in neutral. Torque gets it going in Sport mode (i.e. uses 1st gear) and can reach 45mph but no power whatsoever.

Then a really nice chap stopped to help. Once I realized I could at least get moving, he agreed to follow me home in case I conked out completely. A real total gent - woudn't even take a couple of tins as a thankyou. But, in order to say thanks I'm going to plug his business, which actually looks quite good.

Yeah, just spent the evening on the Jag forums. It's either a gearbox connector corrosion (v likely), or the TCM (quite likely as it's in the boot and that's been damp for quite a while) but as they are £788 +VAT from Jaguar, I rather hope it ain't this! Mr Jenner of multi-XJ12 ownershipville, Scotland has a few s/h ones but he'll be wanting the best part of few hunnert. Some say it may be one or both of the fuel pumps (both internal so a hell of a bugger to change); but I very much doubt this as the car revs fine in neutral.Maybe the trans filter is crudded up.If a fuse blows I get a warning light, and I don't think one of the gearboxes has ever failed even with the 950bhp tuned engine. They are well known to last for ever.Either way, it's going back in the garage until I have the spare funds to do anything about it.I was really looking forward to having a weekend blast - had the route mapped out, pub-lunches planned and everything. Big dog's cock.

I've also had fail this morning. Bond's starter is refusing to engage, even when encouraged by a hammer. Again, lovely day so was planning to have a nice little drive about with the six-pot blaring away. Did have a hilarious FAIL with the Practical Classics XJ40 last week though. It refused to start, instead preferring to just click very quickly when the starter position was achieved. At the third attempt, the headlamp washers came on and wouldn't stop. They emptied the reservoir and I had to quickly disconnect the battery again. I opted for a pool car instead...Nowt like a bit of British heritage!

That's the battery - guarantee. Those 40's need an absolutely tip-top condition battery or they just click and whirr and do weird things to amuse us. Even when I was using mine regularly, if I left it for more than 2 days, I had to keep it on a trickle charger, or boost start it. I once got caught out by Queensgate car-park Nazis, arriving back only 5 minutes after they shut the place, but they wouldn't even let me pay the overnight fee and take it. Had to collect the next day, and all I got was a click and a few whirrs. Had to get a mate out to jump start.I am more than impressed that your h/l washers work! They never work on 40's. Ever.Edit: Is it the red 4.0S that Phil Weedon used to potter about in?

Is it worth it when it's running though? :D

crikey, my mate was running a 4-litre recently that he bought for £200 + another 400 to get it T&T'd..... fuel bills put paid to that folly pretty quickly though!

To be absolutely honest, I think so yes. It's done 161k so now is the time for a lot of things to go bang. Current problem probably due to the fuel pumps - bit of a pain as they are mounted inside the tank. I'll try and source a second hand tank c/w pumps from the usual sources - there will be no change from £1500 for new parts. That would be insane. If it had any other engine, I wouldn't be so fond of it. I like 750's a lot, but I don't warm to them in the same way as I do the Jag. Mercs neither.Truth is, it's worth about £300 in its current state, and a maximum of £1500 if perfect. True love eh?
