Do the girls still smile at the toll booths, or has Olympic fever worn off?

One of the more surreal moments:

Hey Tom,

Didn't know you'd left for good, shame that, makes me feel lonely. The girls do still smile at the toll booths...ive a great piccy somewhere but can't find it, must be on plug in hard drive which i've left in the UK. I'll have a look next Friday while i'm back. The olympics has faded away thank god, but it's been replaced by 2010 Asian Games fever round here because it's being held in Guangzhou City. Thankfully we'll miss it because we leave at Christmas......you just know it's gonna be a total fiasco.

By the way, it's amazin just how many diggers/lorries etc you see tumbled down a hill...lying on their side or just plain collapsed in this part of the world.

Not left for good, just taking a bit of a break. I love those adverts for BaiJiu (Chinese version of Vodka / Methylated Spirit) along the highways - usually followed a few clicks on by a yellow and black picture of a stick-man smiling but sleeping at the wheel with "don't drive drunk" written after it. It is as if to say drink just enough so you don't fall asleep.I'll be back around Xmas time I think - just waiting for Mrs CT's UK immigration to be sorted. Passports are probably in a bulkflow in a warehouse somewhere  Got any photos of the massive suspension bridges around your area? I think the HuMen bridge is the one that skirts along the outside of a bunch of power stations that kick out the yellowest emissions I have ever seen.Keep them coming

Marvellous pics! I am loving them. whenever I go somewhere new i always prioritise local musems, tourist attractions etc well down the list and instead want to check out the crummy corner shops, blokes digging up the road etc so these are right up my street.I went to Shanghai for a fortnight once with work, going in some foundries and metalwork shops and that, it was more memorable and enjoyable than any holiday i've ever been on.

Hey CT, you've got rid of the "Bent beyond recognition" one from your sig! Is it finally dead or something? I really liked that vehicle.

Sold it to a shrimp farmer for £2,000. SUCKER!!!

I miss it. One last time then...

But I still have another one which is the same but without the back-box. Father in law has it

Sold the Kia and the Jeep too.

Isn't that more than what they cost new?
nearly. £3,600 new on the road, but the second hand car market is nuts out there. Fact is that you have to give over a lot of personal information when you buy and register a new car and there are plenty of folk who don't want to do that. Chap was an in-law distant family member with a "bit of history" so needed to stay under the radar. Still registered under father-in-law's name so best describe it as long-term lease. I have a lot of decent connections in the local area traffic-police wise so the reg number is a "safe" one. 20,000 rmb could buy nearly 3 new QQ's (Matiz) though - not much boxes of shrimp in that boot though.

Yeah somewhere, i'll dig em out. Hey if you catch the ferry from Hong Kong airport to Fu Yong you'll see a bridge they're building across the sea. It's a monster of a thing, miles an miles of it.

Those blocks are for the locos.I wanted one for the Jag, but the bonnet bulge required may have obscured any forward view!!I sub'ed a load of work to the loco factory just to marvel at the work going on in there. Unfortunately, it's all gone now - just empty sheds

All these were built in late fifties / early sixties. Easily the most pleasant way to cross the harbour.

Brings back memories of my (fairly fleeting - 5 days in total, split 3 outbound and 2 inbound) visit to HK 3 years back. Were those trams pictured at Causeway Bay?The Crown taxis are comfy things - squishy squashy vinyl flat bench in the back, and cheap - HK$15 (£1 at the time) would get you pretty much anywhere you wanted to go. The ferries were the easiest way to get from Kowloon to HK Island though - great cans of cold coffee from the vending machines too. Most of the private motors I saw there were the predictable Mercs and Porsche 4x4s, but there was some random stuff like an Opel Omega and Mk3 Mondeo. There's a dealer for pretty much any brand you can think of somewhere on the island.

Yup......Causeway Bay & Central. Porcsh+Ferrari also a common sight round these parts. To be honest the MTR (tube) is the way to get about, cheap an quick, but only the north shore. There is a huge building task going on at the mo, tunnels being drilled everywhere, it'l be like a rabbit warren before much longer.

Anyhoos, this happened yesterday...........
