From the Audi User Guide

That equalise the tread depth thing used to be supposedly a killer of transmission bits in the early AWD Volvos and certainly there were warnings of doom in the 850 handbook. My dad never bothered that much with his and nothing disastrous happened (I would have probably been quite religious about rotating the wheels around the car every few thousand miles though)

Fixed! On one wheel. Going for a tyre appointment for the other front wheel tomorrow.

Rear wheels seem OK, I'll measure the rears tread depth and all that tomorrow to make sure it's within Audi limits, or not.

So out in sub-zero temperatures I temporarily forgot it was arctic outside and had been for a day or two and went to open the driver's window... oops. It didn't go well. A loud noise happened and window doesn't go down!

I'm going to have to get into the door to see if I can fix it, hopefully something has just popped off something...

Where abouts are you these days?
I'm tempted to either roffle it off or get rid it some other way, there's a laundry list of issues.
I think it had a very hard life, it's served me well but it's beyond my means.
Which is why I had the Audi sat waiting even before this latest breakage.

I am just off junction 10 of the m56 so a few miles closer.

If it's like A3s and golfs of a similar age the glass is held with these plastic clips which are quite shit anyway with a tendency to break.

Yes Volvo use the same type of thing, I've been annoyed by these a few times!

Thanks, all will be revealed probably when I bother to take the door card off.

Alleged A4 B7 grill arrived, I paid buttons for it so i took a punt.

But it looks different at the top to all the other A4 B7 grills and looks a bit different to what mine would have been, if it was intact.

But maybe it will bodge on?

No, I've looked up the same era Audi A3 grill and it's that... damn.

I can recommend a place called Wigan VAG parts, they are trusted and we're decent on price when I last had a VAG.

Find them on Facebook if you use it.

Ideal, I'll give them a look.

I've got a promise of a refund from ebay on my Audi A3 8p grill or whatever it is that was sold as A4 b7 grill. So that's good.

It's not something I'm massively bothered about but if I can get an unbroken grill for cheap enough I'll do it. If its going to cost hundreds of pounds then I won't.

So I never really saw the buzz about Audi that people seem to have, at least in my area every other car seems to be an Audi to the point my 6yo really wanted an Audi.

Apart from the Quattro Torsen drive train and the seemingly limitless power options, I guess I see why people would want a practical estate that can also do genuine performance car stuff.

Mine is not that though, even though it's the most powerful car I've ever driven.

For all the brand nonsense though and flaship models I never saw why I would want to buy an overpriced VW. Mine was not overpriced, let's say. Maybe mine was too cheap, that remains to be seen. I might need to spend £1000 on a headlight one day, who knows...

But actually I kind of get it, especially with the Torsen awd drive train and some (un)healthy power, it's really quite nice! Auto is quite nice too, relaxing perhaps, but manual is still better.

But I like it a lot and I'm enjoying the experience. It's quiet, unflustered, capable. Especially in the snow and ice. It's unbelievable in the snow and ice.

Yes I use my indicators religiously, never cut anyone up, always leave good distance behind traffic, allow good flow and all that. Definitely don't want to be 'that' Audi driver.

However, after having read about the timing chain horror stories I'm constantly listening to the engine, is that slightly tapping the valve train or the timing chain bursting out of its runners?

I think I would be able to tell if it was the timing chain rattling. Wouldn't I?

"ooh - a bit of wheelspin there"

Instead of gently adding progressive power to the point I'm moving with minimal slip i decided to floor it. Makes for a better visual.

So, one road trip complete.

All good, no issues. Lots of playing with gearbox settings and stuff, lots of 'oh shit it really goes in S mode' moments; after using S mode for engine braking down hills then getting off to an exciting start at the T junction at the bottom of the hill, having forgotten to go back to D mode... press the accelerator as I'm used to for D mode and get the fright of my life as the power punches in when I'm turning onto the new road. Quattro is the shit, the dog bollocks and makes all that sudden unexpected power go straight into the tarmac and not into wheel spins. Motorway driving is fun, back road handling is fun. Whole car is effortless at speeds well above normal.

So my journey was into England from Denbighshire, down to Lichfield, around the High Peak and East Cheshire, to Cumbria, some sightseeing and then over to West Yorkshire before returning home to Denbighshire. So a good few miles playing with things.

Here's a picture of us parked up at the lovely Mardale Inn at Bampton, near Shap, pretty much the zenith of my tour in Cumbria.
