Always love your spots man,do you know if the guy with the ca would sell any parts from it?

I've never actually met him, his yard is basically an unsurfaced backroad so I stop by and wander through when I'm down that way.

The CA has been parked up in those weeds for at least 5 years so I'd say most of the underneath will be rotten, the back doors are.

It was more interior parts i was after, back seats and a cooker unit etc,not to worry

And can someone tell me if this Fiesta Sandpiper was an original special edition?

Nice, isn't it.

According to a magazine article I read a long time ago it was an official special edition in 1979/80. It's a nice-lookng car, although it was originally sold with steel wheels :)

They did a Fiesta Sandpiper 1 and Sandpiper 2 - usual Ford special edition of adding a few extras to a base model. These were based on the 1.1L and available in the two-tone Roman Bronze with either beige or gold lower half, or single colour Roman Bronze. The standard extras included two-tone brown/beige upholstery, radio/casette, stainless trim-rings, four spoke steering wheel, tinted glass and sunroof. I wish I hadn't sold mine. It should have this interior

I've always liked the special editions that Ford did. In the late 70's early 80's Ford were using the names of birds for their Fiesta and Escort specials the Fiesta had the Sandpiper, Firefly and Kingfisher whilst the Escort had the Linnet, Harrier and Goldcrest.

Is there still a car auction up there, Thainstone IIRC?

Yes, its mostly an agricultural mart though.

Bought a few cars from there when I lived up in Tain. Santana GX5 Renner 5 (which stranded me on the A9 in January) and a 240 Estate. Great auction!

I remember seeing loads of those Opirus's in Florida when I went last. All seemed to be owned by a certain demographic....i.e older large-ish Americans in tracksuits and baseball caps. I liked to imagine them trading in some vinyl-roofed, velour seated , wood veneered 1980s, owned from new Buick or Pontiac at their local Kia dealer.

I would get reasonably xcited when I saw one...they had a definite appeal!

I drove a Kia Opirus (badged Amanti in the US) on rental back in 2007, when the original rental, a Lincoln Town Car (I always rent 'proper' American cars when I go) got rear ended by a taxi driver in South Bend, Indiana.

The Kia was OK, had quite a turn of speed on it, perfectly acceptable handling I thought, certainly compared to the Lincoln. It had a 3.8 V6. The styling, well the whole idea of the car really, is designed to appeal to those who want a Lincoln Town Car/Cadillac DTS but don't want to pay $40K+ for a new one.

Personally I'd rather have a 18 month old Lincoln than a Kia though, Town Cars depreciate fairly quickly, not least because of all the Hertz ones!

Florida is good hunting ground for good used examples of all the cars mentioned above, as well as various Buicks, Mercury Grand Marquis, Ford Crown Victoria and other similar cars favoured by retired Americans.
