Water and bulbs dont mix. CRV still hates me - Cookie's adventures in shiteing

Popped up to garage. Its already up on the ramp, getting the fail sorted out.

MOT station had to put oil in it to test it :(

Its a tad rusty underneath.

All solid though. Tester whacked the fuck out of it with the rust hammer. I need to arrange some lanoguard.

Front springs and shocks looked worse, but forgot to take pics of those.

Once it has MOT, I will be sorting bulbs and tyres.

Garage will be getting it back to do the

Back box, axle pins, both rear springs, handbrake, oil leak and service.

My backbox looks just the same. Underside is covered in gloopoguard so overall rust isnt as bad.

All done (well the fail, not the advisories yet).

New MOT achieved for 155.20 all in. Poppy is happy.

Plus I got my CRV booked in for Monday, for ABS sensor.

And in a busy day, just back from adding new wheels to the fleet.

An active wheelchair for Mrs Cookie, as her old standard chair was unable to do wheelies and she struggled to move under her own steam.

The old one could fold up. This one has fixed frame (wheels do come off), so the repkacement for the CRV / S211, needs a good boot. I need to remember to take it with me, when I eventually go car shopping.

Quick update

CRV all good now its ABS sensor has been fixed.

Poppy's Polo went in Monday for most of the advisories and a service. 680 quid. The rear springs on the car were different sizes, not that you could tell from driving it.

The oil leak is rear crank seal. Garage advised not to bother.

So Pops has spent 800 quid. Feel a bit sorry for her, but I want her to learn that cars need looking after and advisories need sorting.

The Polo of Doom has had its first MPG check.

Its more thirsty than the CRV.

20260122_192829.jpg.6331ea0324ad50a89317b8ada5bb8fbd.jpg

If my man maths is correct, its 24 mpg.

I do rag it a bit. Also think whatever sensor (s) are not working / playing up are affecting fuel economy.

Once it stops raining, I can start to address the sensor issue.

Its also going for MOT on Monday.

Polo of Doom actually passed MOT !

Screenshot_20260126_153453_DuckDuckGo.jpg.739f20c653ec522e999ea46bf08e5472.jpg

Now booked in for next week to sort the Anti roll bar, inner cv boot, investigate oil leak and oil and filter change.

Tester said the broken wing mirror should be taped up. I will be ordering a new one today instead.

Not unloved.

Weather, work and life are getting in the way.

Polo of doom went in on Tuesday to address the suspension advisories, find the oil leek and do an oil and filter change.

168 quid and oil leak from the PCV valve.

Two problems have emerged since.

Passenger door mirror was hit while parked on street. Either a pedestrian not paying attention or vandalism. I suspect the former.

Ripped out of mounting, but still on the car. Internal trim has come away too. No further investigation due to the biblical rain in Somerset.

Seriously considering building an Ark.

20260205_111402.jpg.e5f21c5a21694e64558c4db66cc0a2fe.jpg

2nd issue is more worrying.

I was getting the odd squeak from the rear. I hoped it would get picked up on MOT. It wasn't.

Squeak has become an almost constant metallic squeal. Dont think its the brakes. Either suspension or bearing ???

Sounds so bad I dont want to drive it, so its been sat there since Thursday.

Need to get it booked back in to garage for investigation. May as well get the PCV valve and MAP done too. Especially as it also started stalling again on Thursday. Triple whammy. Wing mirror, squealing and stalling.

3 on fleet. Only the Honda working.

Missed out on a Galaxy locally due to not getting off my arse fast enough. Sold in 45 mins from advert going live. Two bloody streets away. Wouldnt have been much of a collection thread lol

Update

Poppys Polo - Both front tyres are deflating over approx a month. Suspect leaking alloys rather than slow punctures. Considering options. Buy replacements / refurb ( not really an option as cant leave it on jack stands in the street, while wheels are away / just pump up every week / strip the polo of doom (maybe).

Why maybe? - Polo of doom is waiting for garage date to fit new MAP sensor / PCV valve and find source and fix the squealing rear suspension / wheel.

The POD is on its last warning. The cheap bangernomics car is turning out to not be far from cheap. This is its last chance.

Merc S320 - tomorrow a local Merc botherer is coming to view. Ive not fixed it, he knows this but wants to view anyway. So it may leave the fleet, if it can be persuaded to jump start and he wants it.

I have to have two working cars by March - SIL is visiting for a few days, staying at local hotel. So she will need to borrow some wheels.

Additionally the search for a replacement for the Honda CRV is still ongoing. Lots of potentials, no time to go view them, so far.

The offer is still there if you want me to sort it. The driveway has been cleared again!

I guess it would need to be towed over now it has no MOT.

If he doesnt want it, then I will explore the cost of getting it to you.

Even if you want to sell it after, you'll get more for it if I can get the battery drain sorted so it can be driven to a pre-booked fresh 12 month MOT.

Did the garage that fitted them put rim/bead sealer shit on the alloys? Not all places do as it can look a bit messy. However I've found that has solved slow leaks on many cars for me that have less than perfect alloys. Might be worth going into a local tyre shop and having a chat.

Failing that, I'm sure alloys for a Polo/Fabia/Ibiza should be readily available and cheap on eBay/marketplace/scrapyard if keeping a lookout.

Not sure re bid sealer.

Its 3 tyres deflating not 2. Back nearside was at 12psi, when I checked that tonight. 7 weeks since they were last checked. Im definately leaning to leaky alloys.

Agreed re cost and availabilty of Alloys. I will be keeping an eye out.

Merc left the fleet on Friday.

20260227_101148.jpg.df6900702c437439769733d7baf98ad7.jpg

Seems as though the remaining two cars have decided to get a bit stroppy.

The Polo is now stalling every time I take my foot off the gas, so thats parked up till it goes to garage on Tuesday.

20260227_151832.jpg.19a625417b3775f84eed1591568a7ebe.jpg

This is its final chance. Its getting a new pcv valve, new map sensor and now i suspect it needs an idle control valve. The cheap bangernomics car is just costing too much, just for the pleasure in razzing around in a go kart.

Went away for the weekend and the CRV decided to also play up. Nearside rear brakes sound metal on metal - graunchy as hell. Very loud. Made for a nervous drive home, up over the mendips.

So tomorrow, as I

1) have to have a fully working car to get Mrs Cookie to Hospital / GP visits and 2) Have to pick the dogs up from the kennels at 4pm

Will be buying the cheapest car for sale, locally, with a boot big enough for the wheelchair.

Polo of Doom in garage to replace PCV valve and MAP sensor. PCV due to reported oil leak on MOT. MAP sensor due to ongoing parts darts. Think this is round 3.

Looks like they found whats wrong with it.

Its developed a coke habit. A habit that may prove expensive.

Exhibit 1 - The engine end (probably manifold - im no expert, as you all know).

Exhibit 2 - the PCV valve

Screenshot_20260303_082807_WhatsApp.jpg.1377c53424e07882b3813c469333e2d3.jpg

Ive not seen one that bad for a long time.

Given its age and low mileage, suspect car has spent a long time running cold and its sludged up.

New PCV going on and garage will do its best to clean out the crud on the engine side.

If this does not fix it, its getting binned.

Once they have done the Polo, the CRV is getting new rear brakes.

CRV also fixed now.

The friction material on one pad (inside pad, NSR) had fallen off, so metal on metal.

The other 3 pads were all good. All changed. All sorted.

20260303_115902.jpg.b50e37552c704288714ef515543533da.jpg

Garage advised small hole in rear of NS sill.

So will need the tickle stick, before next MOT.

Polo of Doom home.

No EML - so far. Will be taking it for a good thrash tonight.

Stopped at Halfrauds on way home for a bottle of redex, which has been chucked in the tank.

The Polo of Doom has decided it really hates me.

Drove great last night and this morning.

Then lunchtime today, EML makes a re-appearence. No connection with OBD port to read the code - suspect port has been damaged. Initially the reader lit up but said it couldnt make connection. Then finally it stopped even getting power from the OBD.

So no idea if its the same issue or a new one. Like all VWs of this vintage drives fine with the EML on.

I cant keep chucking it in the garage at nearly 200 quid a go on parts darts.

20260304_120908.jpg.0d23dcd5da63fcbc319f5ec502c499c6.jpg

So it may be leaving the fleet.  Three options 1. Very cheap roffle 2. Scrap 3. Trade in

I really love this car, the Polo of Doom.

So tonight, I thoughf I would give it one more chance. Plugged the code reader in, more in hope than expectation.

F*ck me, it connected to the haunted OBD port.

Error as follows

20260305_201627.jpg.4c0dbad3acd56f6ecfe183008dd43f4d.jpg

Now this is a new one. The previous two codes now gone. So either the new PCV valve or MAP sensor have fixed those :)

When the car broke down in Poppys ownership, the garage said it had thrown an EGR code, amongst one of many. So the EGR was blanked.

@RoverFolkUs Now the other issues are resolved and the car can now breath correctly, do you think a blanked off EGR could throw this fault??

I expect the EGR may be as clogged as the PCV was, but that can be cleaned / replaced if necessary.

Hmm, I would wager it can't really differentiate between a high and low reading. Because otherwise it makes no sense for it to detect excessive flow when it's been blanked off.

I'd firstly check for any air leaks.

How is the car behaving with this fault? Any hesitation/cutting out/limp mode or is it fine with the light on?

I seriously can't believe how this car has treated you 😅

Well its been running really well since its coke habit was sorted out :)

Of course, it will now spectacularly shit itself lol

As EGR valves dont seem to be many pennies, i'm tempted to put a new one on.

Maybe im just a motoring masochist. Because the car still puts a smile on my face.

I'll play devil's advocate and suggest just running it as is for now 😅 - I've known VAG of this era to run absolutely fine with an EGR code, and if it's been blanked it's not going to do any harm. They can cause issues if they get stuck open but if it's been blanked that won't apply in this case

If it was me I'd say I'd be inclined to just live with the EML if it still drives fine. Being a 52 plate the EML wouldn't even be an MOT fail

Well the pragmatist in me agrees.

But if I dont clear the fault, I wont know if it develops another.

Although I could just do regular scans to check.

Will see how she goes for the next couple of weeks.

An update with pictures

Honda CRV - after hitting a pothole on Friday, very loud knocking from front nearside along with metallic scraping sound that kicks in above 20 mph and gets worse the faster you go. No evidence to suggest unsafe, but feels like it, so parked up while I have a ponder.

Polo of Doom - Due to above has became main (only !) Transport. It repaid my faith in it, by shunting when changing from Drive to Reverse and when it kicks down from 2nd to 1st. Still driveable, but may also explain the weird metallic rubbing noise its developed over the last month. I do love it, but after all the money spent to get it to run ok, im not prepared to spend more. For now, its being kept and driven more gently. Hope it lasts. Definately relegated to local trips only.

As Mrs Cookies wheelchair wont fit in the Polo, without a lot of dissasembly and swearing, this left me in a quandry.

So this has just joined the fleet, after a frantic weekend of searching.

Excuse the pic from its advert, I forgot to take any !

i30 Estate, 1.6 diesel with proper slush box. Just under 100k on clock. Full history in a ring binder :) Last service September.

Sold reluctantly by an elderly gentleman with terminal cancer, who is tying up loose ends while he still can :(

About 1k less than book for a private sale. Once I had chatted to him and walked round it, I just bought it. No haggling. It was worth what he was asking. The issues were not even discussed until after the handshake.

Couple of small issues. Fuel filler cap wont open automatically. You need to use a lolipop stick to lever it open - he has left me a supply of about 20 in the car :)

The outside rear lights have blown, so have some condensation.

Couple of supermarket dings.

None of this makes me regret paying the asking.

He had a new spare Pirelli, that he's given me (he always buys in pairs, but only needed one on the car) and had ordered new windscreen wipers. Will shout when he has them.

Ive never had a Hyundai before, so looking forward to getting to know it.

Slight fly in the ointmemt. I forgot to take this with me

20260316_170744.jpg.846a07bdc88c8877ef7a0b5caadc2b17.jpg

So couldnt measure up.

Dont know if the wheelchair will fit !

Will walk over to his, tonight, to pick it up. Havent even driven it yet. He just gave me a spin round the block in it.

When you know, you know.

Monday, the CRV went to the garage - to be looked at when they had the chance.

Today, advised NSF ball joint failed. A part that was replaced late last year.

I ok'd the work. Hope its ready by Friday.

i30 rear light, NSR. As per update when I bought it, the light is blown.

Its slightly damaged, but doesn't leak.

Practised my silicone skills on it.

Not bad for first attempt.

This weekend, I will swap with the original unit, then dry out the original, seal it up and then swap back in.
