Somehow it turned into a collection thread

So...

A friend of mine was having a few issues with his vehicle and I offered to run a multimeter across it and confirm that the alternator was at fault.  So I head over for a look.

Alternator fault confirmed he starts talking about it having a few niggles here and there. His biggest issue was that since he inherited a much comfier vehicle, he didn't really use it any more, then he says

'Do you want it for free?'

The inner voice says yes straight away, but I stop to consider the points:

  1. I sold a car earlier this year because there were too many cars so there is no need for it  - CHECK
  2. It has a charging issue which means I'll have to fix something                                                       - CHECK
  3. It has a short MOT                                                                                                                                             - CHECK
  4. It is not the sort of vehicle I have owned before or actually need                                                 - CHECK

So with all these important points considered I go home, sort out insurance and tax and then tell my delighted wife

Trial and error has taught me that is the only saddle that doesn't kill my arse after 30 miles.

So,

I have to fail in some of the standard collection thread requirements. I've only got to travel 2 miles:

  1. food en route would have been gluttony
  2. no planes trains or automobiles were boarded
  3. no PEZ shot. it would have doubled the journey!

But look what I got for the effort!

Collection was on a Sunday. The next Monday I drove it to work.

The bike was already in the back of the van, but I needed to collect something else from work.

This was due for the scrap. Nothing wrong with other than a bit of surface rust. It was taking up space they needed to convert into press tool shelving. At 100kg there is no way this would have fitted into the golf so by day 2 the van has paid for itself!

This looks great!!

Loads of these in Spain along with Berlingos and C15's - all seem to have windows in the back and they are always scavenging from the urbinizacion bins!

This one has large window tinted and small window obscured which makes reverse parking a bit confusing.

Before I collected this fine vehicle I'd already jotted down the part number for the alternator and ordered an ebay special for £25. That fitted the charging issue disappeared.

The budget car stereo was non working. unplugging it and plugging it back in again has resolved that issue.

I had to replace a piece of injector pipe as it was weeping.

The only other thing has been the vast amount of MDF dust. most of it is now gone and any plastic part that would fit in the dishwasher has been!

ooh, that's a bit posh! Looks like rear seatbelts too!

Nice haul!  Should serve you well for some time!

I would love to fit rear seats to this!

I'm guessing that the Ibiza mk2  rear seats and belts were used on this? They are a bit thin on the ground these days so I doubt I'll come across one in the scrap yard.

I wonder if the mk3 polo equivalents are the same and were used on the VW caddy version?

I may have to take a trip to the scrap yard with a tape measure and see how things stack up.

MOT passed with a few advisories:

track rod end play

suspension bush play

rusty brake pipes.

Very happy with that!

Have you joined the MK2 caddy/seat Inca page on mugjotter? Seems a decent group with spares and advice - wide range of van stles/approaches too.

It looks a nice wee tub, well bought!

Can confirm these are good wee vans.

I think the van's platform sister cars' rear seats can be adapted to fit but there are van specific parts. Possibly so that the fold completely flat.

Good work, vans are getting popular! A free one is especially good.

My Dispatch is so useful I wouldn't be without it.

That's a fair point. I have not yet lifted the false floor behind the drivers seat to discover what the footwell section looks like. There are holes where theshoulder mounts for the seatbelts should go, but not anchor points.

It would be easy if I knew someone local with a mk3 polo to compare. I might see if I can find someone local from a mk3 polo mugjotter* group.

*I get it now!

I think the floorpan up to the van floor is similar but there's something different like the way the seats clip into the sides or something like that.

As I understand it, the upper rear seat backs need brackets on the van

Very helpful! Thanks for that!

I'm familiar with the seat clip on the car version as I have a mk3 golf.

I've joined a few caddy groups and it seems there is a set of seats brackets and belts for sale every month or so. I'll try my luck with that first, but if all else fails I'll head to the scrappy in search of a 6n2 polo armed with a cordless angle grinder to remove the seat brackets.
