WTF is wrong with my car?

Come on carb engine'd experts. The car is perfect, but the past couple of weeks I've been having problems that have gradually gotten worse.Put simply, the car drops out of 'power' and the rev counter drops accordingly and then returns to normal. Tonight, it was a nightmare, all the way home from North Wales, even cutting out at a junction. Is it the ignition coil? Hayelp!

Is it just crap running through your carb?, Maybe a long run has dislodged some shit, I had a slimilar problem with my 02, Fitted a in-line fuel filter and that seemed to of cured it.What car is it you have?, I've just driven home from North Wales as well tonight, all 5 hours of it :(

What car is it? Does it have electronic ignition or points? If the rev-counter is jumping about it's ignition related and very unlikely to be the carb.

sounds like the coil to me - definately sounds ignition related rather than carb - 1st stop would be to replace with a new one. Make sure you buy a quality one as there are some dud new ones arounddodgey coils can splutter on for some time

I've cleaned out the carb, there's nowt wrong with it! It's also had a new filter. I thought it was fuel related, but now I know it's more electronically related due to that rpm gauge. It's on a 1981 Suzuki Sc100 Whizzkid. It's a F10A carb engine (as on the Bedford Rascals), with no extra stuff added on.

It's also got a mechanical fuel pump running off the camshaft. ;) Float bowl is full looking through the window.

Ignition coil is preceded by some kinda box, and then to what looks like a normal distributor with what looks like a (new) condensor on the side. Engine was totally rebuilt last year. THink I'll test coil Ohm tommorow.

the box thingy is likely to be a ballast resistor which is often found in electronic ignition systems. It protects the electronic ignition system. Try a new coil - even if the existing coil looks new that means squat - trust me on this. Last month my Moggy broke down on the M1 I - loss of power immediately suspected the coil which I replaced with a new one I had in the boot - car still woudn't start so I dismantled the whole ignition system and replaced the dizzy cap, rotor, points, leads - still wouldn't start by then it was 3.00am so I phoned the RAC - problem was the brand new coil - it was a dud.once you have replaced the coil if there are still issues then I would replace the HT leads and the Dizzy cap and the rotor (if it has one)good luck

Shit Station, I didn't know you had a Whizzkid!Hope you get your problems sorted. It's worth bearing in mind that 'new' parts aren't infallible. There was a lad on NSJC with a Sierra that charging problems, so a new alternator went on. Weirdly, this made things worse, and the thing drove him insane. He checked everything, really lost confidence in his ability to fix stuff, and it later transpired the new alternator he'd yogged £60 was cagged.

Yup, new ignition parts can be flaky. A knackered condender would cause intermittent running problems.

avoid ANYTHING Intermotor branded. It's shit and no mistake. Try any old stock Lucas branded stuff.......I reckon maybe even try Vauxhall for the bits, seeing as they sold Bedford Rascals, and some bits might still be available...

Yeah, had to miss out because I would've ended up sitting on the side of the motorway in the middle of nowhere.Unfortunately, no-one stocks the ignition coil (or can't be arsed doing a bit of searching) so I'm buggered.

Whereabouts are you, Mr Station? I've got a couple of spare coils etc.

That new condensor would be my first port of call, especially if you've not had the car long. Shows someone has already been trying to fix the problem. Check the points, and if there's any sign of arcing then bin them and fit a new condensor. Next stop, replace the coil. (I have a dim recollection of seeing some brand new ignition parts left over from my SJ410 in my 'tools I seldom use' cupboard. I'll be in there later today so I'll check if there's anything that might be useful.)

Pete-M, I am on the Wirral! Dead_E23, I'll take any parts off you!I have taken everything off and checked and replaced, I am using those 'bulbs' that you put on the plugs/leads and they occasionally light up on 1 and 2 and the engine attempts to start, but it's periodic. Second day of missing work, boss = not impressed.Primary coil test: 3ohm (normal), secondary: 0ohm (meant to be 8Kohm)

Couldn't see them when I was in there just now. It's jam packed full though, so I'll have another look when I'm 'putting away' later. Anyway, sounds like that coil is dud. I doubt it'll be too hard to find a replacement if you get along to a decent motor factor - they're pretty generic.

If you want me to pop over with a spare coil and a dwell meter, send me a PM with your addy or call me on 07731 744088.

No worries old chap. Nice to see a Whizzkid! If you need me to bring the dwell meter over one day, gimme a shout. It might be fine, take it for a spin!
