Too complicated for their own good them new Passats. Stupid electronic handbrake, stupid start / key mechanism, forever flashing airbag warning lights, surprisingly slow TDi donkey. Quite comfy though if you get one with leather...I've got a 2004 Seat Toledo which has been great so far. Nearly 60k on it and no issues, only needed normal service parts (and two tyres yesterday which set me back £200...)

We have an 08 Fiesta 1.25 but i dont drive it because its boring, but to be fair its now done 16,000 miles without its first service and hasnt broken yet !To be honest we`re hoping someone pinches it or sets it on fire, not easy paying for it now im only working part time !!Ill stick to my 205

Dont even get me started on electronic handbrakes. Grrrrrrr.....

yup black leather heated seats they wouldnt be outa place in the house.slow tdi donkey are you sure :? this car may be allot off things but slow is not one off them you acctually have to look at the speedo to find out your speeding its that damn smooth.the b5 passat that i traded in for this gave me 5 years without spending a penny on it other that serviceing.

That's the dilemma you have I suppose.Running around in sub-£500 shitters means I never lose very much.

I use a my Audi every day, but it isn't as mental as newer stuff. It's on 178k at the moment, but everything apart from the little computer display works as it should, and that works fine if it's cold out. It's as lardy as new stuff though, at 1750 kg it's heavier than the P5 which appears to be made out of old bank vaults.

Yeh, just depends which of the two TDi engines you have. IIRC there is a 1.9 and a 2.0 TDi. 2.0 is pretty quick, 1.9 is very much not. Pulling onto M6 sliproad and having a OMFG WHERE HAVE TEH POWAS GONE? moment is not something I was expecting.

If they don't want to get in a transit, get the bus.....

My 2006 VW GTI went back to the dealership 8 times in 3 years for unscheduled mechanical problems. These included:-an "electrically defective turbo recirculating valve and intake flap"-air con compressor completely failed-leaking diaphram in crankcase breather valve (made horrible screeching noise when driving actually)-electric windows that worked intermittently-cracked oil pan due to poor design. uckily it had a warranty to cover nearly all of the repairs, but downtime was bad and it properly frightened me out of owning one without the warranty. It's gone in a week and I'm replacing it with Amerishite (or possibly a Peugeot 505). Can't wait.

This VW thing has been going on for a while now. Mrs A's 2002 Polo suffered from:creaking brakescreaking steering(her words but a very good diagnosis)random warning lights coming on and offrandom failure to start when hot, cold or in betweenIn the end she lost confidence in the thing, cut her losses and changed it for an Almera, which has just visited the garage for the first time since its last MOT a year ago. It just needed a basic service and MOT, no faults or impending problems :) Thank goodness everything is not as unreliable as a VW

Modern stuff does tend to be a lottery due to the proliferation of electronics. My wife's 2001 Fabia 1.4 16v (a VW engine), that we owned for 3 years and took the mileage from 24k to 88k on, had a number of "cry wolf" episodes relating to the engine management light that never really got resolved, despite having a number of new parts (both lambda sensors, various temperature sensors and other bits I now forget). In the end I just bought a £25 code reader and reset the light every other week. Plus there were other design faults, like cambelt tensioners made of chocolate that required changing every 40k, as well as a reputation for piston ring issues that often requires a new engine. Thankfully it didn't suffer with that. But on the other hand, the company car I had in my old job, a 2006 Saab 9-3 1.9TiD (which, according to the Internets, is OMG THE WORST ENJUN EVAR), had absolutely no issues in 11 months and 25k of fairly hard use, apart from a spring breaking in the ashtray. Our Accord, which has been in the family since it was 3 years and 18k miles old, has never required any work other than servicing and consumables (tyres, brakes). Think it's on the original complete exhaust as well. It'll need a new set of shocks for the next MOT, but I think you can allow it that. Totting up the bills, it's cost 4p/mile in maintenance over the last 112k miles which I think is pretty good going really.

this ones the 2 litre 140 so quite quick for such a big heavy car,my last one was a b5.5 1.9 and i could safely say it was a far better car.you would think that the new 2 littre would be more economical and enviromentaly friendly but allas you would be wrong.old 1.9 passat. £120 per year tax averaged 54mpg higher on long run. new 2.0 passat £150 per year tax higher emisions driveing like miss daisy 36-39 new

That's pretty piss poor, is it because of all the extra lard?

not to sure on that but at a guess thats the only explanation i can think off that or mabe that deisels shouldnt have 16 valves and be to complex

I think it's because diesel cars shouldn't exist. Hateful things.

Pah! My diesel BX is the best car ever built I reckon.Ok, so it always feels like it's got turbo lag (mainly because it doesn't have a turbo) but you get up to speed briskly enough really, and it'll sit at 70 (or maybe more...) all day, while sipping fuel like a hummingbird. Yes, I had to spend £68 at the weekend and the alternator now doesn't seem to be charging but it's small fry really and I'll just stick some new brushes in the alternator. It's capable yet simple. Perfect.

Diesels are alright if they make a racket and sound like a load of rocks bouncing around inside a tumbledryer, it's these new-generation ones I can't deal with, all whistly and groany.

Posted

Ooh, controversial.I like diesels - the proper, old-style clattery things with mechanical fuel systems anyway.Common fail can feck off.

Posted

Yup, old skool dizzels iz da best. What I love about the BX is that it'll happily pull the thing along on tickover. In second. And probably third if I tried it. It also has the flattest torque curve of any car I've ever driven. A far cry from modern diesels that are all nothing-BAM-POWERZ-nothing.

I just don't get the whole diesel thing. Ok, they're slightly cheaper to run, but they're bloody horrible things that need turbos just to make them tolerable (Unless they're BX's, natch ;-) ).Over the last few years my brother has had what are allegedly the best of the current diesels. BMW 530d, Merc E280 and a few other 'brilliant' diesels. They're bloody awful. The Merc needs a 7 speed autobox to stay in it's optimal rev range and even though it's meant to be one of the most refined diseasel lumps available it still vibrates badly at idle. It's very quick and ok on fuel, but it's just wrong having a £35k state of the art car that is less refined than my '61 P5 when in traffic. The 530d just blew up all the time. That was quick when it worked, but more fragile than a K series with a leaky rad.I keep trying diesels to see if they've got any better, and they do make advances, but I'd rather pay the extra in fuel and drive something smooth and quiet that doesn't vibrate and suffer from a narrow torque band and turbo lag.

dont read this thread then, it appears diesels can do no wrong!http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topi ... g%20back!!!

As I said above, some diesels are bloody quick....... doesn't stop 'em being horrible.
