Pushed in by the owner in the early 70s when the gearbox needed replacing.... it's apparently very solid considering although there's been some reactions between different metals. I'm sure the fact it's probably worth £6k as is helped with decision to haul it out :)

I'm off the 'lakelook' my car.... anyone know of a source of NOS algae?

Looks better than most ratlook vans to be honest. At least it hasn't got a narrowed front beam, and it probably rides higher on bare brake drums than most T2s now

+1. I cannot see the attraction in those slow, noisy things.

I suppose when the scene tax wears off it'll go back in again anyway.

That's most 'autoshite' motors though, surely? Show me a quick Commer or Sherpa camper (as standard.... no Ambulance V8 powered ones!).But yeah, the price of them is stupid but has been covered before ;)

cheer up lads! Its a good story if nowt else, if it wasnt gonna be worth megabucks when done we wouldnt have the fun of reading the story. It does look surprisingly healthy for somethign thats been in a lake for 20 years!

I remember a few years ago finding an interesting car in a lake outside Hexham in northumberland, the lake had a load of naturally-occuring copper sulphate in it and the car didnt look to be in bad condition, it had a curvy 60's style roof and I thought it might be a Mk2 Jag but couldnt be sure. I'd love to go back and see if its still there, in fact I might try to find it on google earth. There was also an early Mk3 escort in there but that looked shafted from crash damage.

###EDIT### theyre in here!

That Samba (for it is a 23-window Samba, to an enthusiastic enthusiast the most spaff-worthy of all Type 2s) actually looks to have fared a bit better than that American thing that was buried in a purpose-built cavern below a park in the states as a 'time capsule'. Turns out the thing leaked, so the car had been submerged and then slowly dried out every time it rained. 50 years on and they snapped it in two hoisting it out, the lower 12 inches had dissolved and the rest was pretty minging.

Amongst the usual car mags I buy every month I buy a VW Camper one (I'm a T25 Pervert) I've noticed that when they do these two page spreads of shows for a couple of issues they've awarded their own little 'Van of the show' to Commers! fair play especially considering its a VW mag.

I believe they drained an old quarry outside Glasgow a few years ago and found dozens of stolen cars. J-J might know more about it.
