I had an e28 520i manual and it was pretty slow but very smooth when up to speed. I bet the auto's a right plodder. Is that what you had?

I bet that 316 isn't much fun with the autobox. I had an e21 320 (straight 6) with an autobox and it was hatefull and would have been improved 100% by a manual box.

i cooked the box of a shark nose 320 on the M8 in central glasgow when I floored it four up and tried to get to a ton sometime in the 1990s. Definitely benefit from from a porridge stirrer!

My 320 auto let you go straight from drive to reverse even if you where doing 90 mph at the time. I did it once and created a 40 metre skid mark. I also left tyre marks on the road.

The 2nd time it happened I was out on a test drive with someone who wanted to buy it. I explained it was possible to do it so to be careful when changing manually between gears. 30 seconds later he fuggin did it and skidded to a juddering halt. Unfortunately some poor guy on a bike was behind us and cycled straight into the back of the car! There's no brake lights when you jam it into reverse. He didn't even buy it (the guy on the test drive not the one on the bike).

Ah, hadn't seen that! Far too much. At half that its still not exactly a bargain. Just sold one of mine - a pretty much spotless 3.0 dCi Initiale with plenty of MOT and less miles for the same amount he wants
