Wow! Brilliant stuff, thanks for posting. Renault garage and Esso my favourites.I'd love to see a book or just a collection solely of old garages. When I was (very much) younger I remember there was a series of books available in the local library. These books were somehow vaguely based on the concept of workplaces and had titles something like 'Working In a Garage' or somesuch. Anyhow, I remember reading over and over again the two that featured dealerships and petrol stations both of which had a lot of pictures. I'd love to find them now but with no real idea of what they were actually called and they've probably been out of print for 25 years I don't think I've much hope...

That is definately an early 80's Corolla hatchback, not as common as the saloon version which some reletives of mine had. Its sitting on wheels from a early 80's Celica or Supra.Given its location and the Berinsfield people, it probably met its end on the banger track at Standlake.

Looks as if you might have got yourself another rare Corolla derivative here:

Looks the SL (!) coupe version.

Nice to see this early 180B estate, just like my old one:

Great lorries too. That transporter with the Minis and Range Rover on it gets about doesn't it?

Flaming crikey! These photos are blinkin' ace. Looking at them makes me feel like I'm a kid again. The fact I've just wet myself only enhances the effect.

So many excellent photos! The red Simca VF1 van, the white Alfasud Ti (with bonnet up), think I can spy a MkI Passat in silver, Luker Bros removals, SO LO depot, 180B estate 8)

Into the 1980's, pictures get thinner on the ground but still some gems.

I spy red R14, MkI Strada, green R18, silver Samba, green Sunbeam, white Spacevan - All FTW!Were those minibuses Transits does anyone know? Also, is that dustcart a Revopak? IainL will do backflips if it is! Are those shots all Banbury because I never found a Woolworths in Oxford which I found odd, albeit they're not anywhere now :( Winchester was another bizarre place that should have had a Woolworths but didn't. Everywhere worth it's salt should have had a Woolworths, it was a given!PS: you have a repeat amongst that lot, not bothered, only it might be denying us an alternative cool picture!

This is a great thread! the pics are just superb. I like the commercial vehicle ones, Guy big j's seemed a popular choice around these parts in the day....

Yes, Mellor bodied Mk3 Transits which belonged to "Thames Transit" who were an offshoot of the Devon General bus company. They flooded Oxford with minibuses in 1986 when deregulation allowed competition to flourish. They carried on until 1997 when Devon General group decided to sell out to Stagecoach. Devon General and Thames Transit had huge fleets of Transit and later Iveco minibuses

Yes, they are Banbury. I believe Oxford never had a Woolworths, if it did then it closed many years ago. There was a Woolworths at Cowley Centre on the edge of the city though. Similarly there was never a Wetherspoons in the City until very recently, but there was one at Cowley.

I like the look of those but they must have disappeared off the roads very quickly as I have no recollection of seeing any on the roads even when I was a kid in the 80s!

Was this some kind of stuffy Oxford regulations preventing 'normal' type shops from bringing the city down? :? (like in Chichester where a city centre McDonalds was only allowed because it occupied the old cinema building hence blended in with the 'architecture' )
