Fast and forgotten

They’re nowhere near as bad as made out. It’s the Rev 1 that is the snappiest.

But drive an MR car that has a bit of go, like a FF and you will rightly get what you deserve.

OK, I can sense some fanboi bridling here. Not my intention.

I would like to drive one that categorically isn't fucked mechanically before making my mind up about whether or not they're snappy - not that I'm the arbiter of what's decent or not.

The GT-Ss I've driven were utter pricks, but they were all scabby, abused examples (they were seriously cheap in the early Noughties, and people didn't perhaps maintain them as they should bar winding the boost up). One GT-S I drove would step out under boost in a straight line in more or less whatever gear you chose. It felt to me like it had been hit up the arse and thrown back together with very cheap replacement parts (oh, and Nexens).

I've raced MR stuff in RL and done OK, FWIW. I'm not powerfully built company director levels of decent, but I can throw a car around without killing myself, eh.

Anyway, what we all want is the surgeon's hands special - a 1.4-litre Citroen ZX. They corner 0.000000000000002 seconds quicker than a 306 because of passive rear steer, which means they're the fastest cars in the motherfucking galaxy.

Is the Mazda 323 posted earlier the same as the turbo 4x4?

Was always on my radar back in the day, especially after watching one take part in the Scottish Rally Championship.

One of those cars that when I had money weren't around and when I didn't one would pop up for sale.947f1937beeb1887bd52abf211166033.jpg

Good shout. Very rare cars these.

(Got this one I am likely to soon sell if you're interested...)

I'd forgotten the 306 D-Turbo.

Granted I hadn't been driving all that long back then, but I still remember being downright astounded by how that thing bounded forward as I pulled it out of the forecourt, and the downright relentless way it kept doing so well into speeds that could only be fully tested on a private test track.

I know it's probably not actually that quick in the grand scheme of things (especially nowadays), but from someone who drove a Metro at the time and still had all diesels categorised in my mind as "economical but slow" so to find a hot hatch with an oil burner under the bonnet was an unexpected concept. The same setup was used in the ZX in Volcane trim wasn't it?

406 Coupe was quicker I'm sure...in fact it was properly swift, first car I saw three digits on the private test circuit. You kinda expected that though with a three litre V6 under the bonnet and with the noise it made. Even in custard yellow. I reckon we would actually have saved money getting it resprayed, thing was in the forecourt for well over a year and everyone who looked at it was put off by the colour.

Anyone remember the Argyll? A Scottish 1980s supercar effort. Originally designed to have a Turbo'd Rover V8, It eventually ended up with a Prv V6 and Renault transaxle. post-20412-0-36909700-1543836430_thumb.jpg

I've met one of the members of the original team. I didn't come away with the impression that we missed out on much.

I don't think I could claim the MG Maestro as forgotten, at least not around here, but what about it's brother from another mother, the 216 Vitesse:

And it's contemporary from Ford, the Orion 1.6i Ghia:

Or this later, faster blue Rover 200:

Or these?

I reckon it looks ace actually...*but* those are totally the wrong wheels for it and the suspension is too high. Fix those and it could work... probably better in a colour other than silver too.
