Valve stem seals done.

We've evaluated we can't be fucked trying to make our own exhaust and we're just going to pay someone else to do it.

The 'old' exhaust looks new to me.

It does to me too: alas, it's a very poor fit, blowing at all its joints. A new system isn't that much less than stainless, so why not?

Head is back on, time to do the cambelt.

The D-Series has a large hex tool to get the big end pulley off, it can be a right bastard.

However this was a revision and early '90s cars don't have it, just a 17mm bolt.

It's off now at some expense:8efc995ada36c6a71e7f3bfc038a96e4.jpg

Should have used an impact socket

Update of the day: the cambelt had skipped a tooth. Just valve clearances to set now, and exhaust to remount.

I'm excited about the potential increase in performance.

I wanted to buy a performance air filter element: no cone filters here.

I looked for something to fit and found the right K&N part, searched for it and the cheapest I found -by around £20 was from a Croatian company on Amazon.

I ordered it last week, it came yesterday and was fitted today.

I was surprised to find out it was a NOS part dated 1997:

As some of you will have noted today, the downpipe bolts on my exhaust have come loose. I'll stick some locknuts on them for now, but an actual exhaust with a bit of vibration damping is very high on my agenda.

The car is running well, no more misfires or hunting, and possibly a bit less flat, but I need to see how it is with a proper exhaust before a proper judgment can be made.

Turns out the manifold/downpipe gasket had fallen apart about as quickly as it'd been fitted - a good third of it was missing.

Not quite sure what to do now - exhaust enquiries will go on this week, in the meantime I need to find a gasket for it.

Tin foil wrapped around some cereal packet will do in a pinch if you're stuck if it's just a flat flange-sandwiched type of gasket.

Stainless exhaust fitting booked for the 5th: the fitted price for a stainless system from the downpipe back came in at £449 VAT inclusive.

The parts from Jetex to make my own was approaching that before VAT, and it wouldn't be done in seven hours either, more like two weeks of swearing.

Somethings are always worth paying a garage for, that sounds like one of them.

And today I did just that.

It's loud, silly, and a bit obnoxious, but it looks factory, the car's running smoother, and there's a bit more power to boot.

Need to look into Dynamat though.

Shift cable arrived today, and shall be fitted tomorrow. Yay, P!

A new fuel relay arrived today and was installed. Hopefully the worst of the running issues are now cured, when the final few parts arrive and are installed everything should be fine, if not then investigations need to be made.

The exhaust has been deemed too loud - if the GTi is started in the vicinty of the Bini, the latter's alarm triggers. My mum won't drive it out of embarassment, either.
Besides, it is stupidly loud, and while amusing, is just... no. It's not right, it's not what I intended, etc.

I'm having another silencer fitted next week.

In other news I've befriended a local dubber that's good with a spray can.
I think I might have the GTi's paint issues sorted - I've a can of Tempest Grey in the garage for the lower flank - as for the colour, I'm thinking of having the navy on the front end faded into the lighter blue further back, I think that might look a bit nicer than the red wings and non-matching trim.

Twenty fucking quid for an air filter???

I felt ripped off when I paid four the other day!

That kind of shit looks shit even when done with professional equipment. Just how shit it will look done with rattle cans by a Dubber will be the source of much hilarity.

To make that sort of fade work even slightly you'd need to paint the front bumper dark blue and the rear wings, bumper, and boot lid in a pale blue or silver.  Before you know it you'll be adding three spoke alloys, massive speakers, and neon underlighting so you can go cruise the local retail park.

i think the 'far too loud' zorst kocks the cap around my a few degrees. The duo tone fade out paint job would swivel the cap a full 180 degrees. Hold the steering wheel on the left side with right hand whilst hanging over the handbrake for the full monty

I know what you mean with the boom and burble back box, we have one that sets the alarm off on my van when you blip the throttle. Yoof used to tell me if he gave it the beans in an underground car park he could set a crescendo of alarms off FTW.
