Went get donuts.

20201207_200804.thumb.jpg.b412d98c17fe62e29c2e3cf8eea6a8a8.jpg

And a chocolate malt.

Carburetor is definitely jetted for slightly colder weather, as it's buzzing along really happily in this (8°C) weather. Heater is ferociously hot.

Gearbox works perfectly when it's cooler, so yes. Valve block out again and I'm going to polish the governor slugs.

Brake needs adjusting a little more but it's fun to drive in cool dry weather!

On this variant of the gearbox no. The military ones had adaptation in the case and a takeoff point. This one draws up from both pumps out of the sump and then straight into the valve block.

I presume these boxes have a fluid pan, just wondered if a man of your skill could source another spare one and experiment with fitting a cooler to it.

They do have a big pressed steel pan, the issue is not so much with the fluid getting too hot when the car is going, it is only when the car has been run and then sits up for a while and all the heat builds up in the valve block.

I think I know what's causing it so I'm going to pull it apart (yet again) and try resolve it.

It's a hell of a lot better than it was, I've just not been going crazy at the valves because I don't have spares. Slowly, by small measures and see if it makes improvements is how it has been going.

Bought a tiny baby hone.

Gonna drop the valve block out, do the primary bores and polish the slugs.

I'm going to make a smaller hone like the one I made for the valves, just out of finer paper (valve one was for iron, 220 grit).

More of the same. Buffed the burrs off the governor valves.

Still gets fussy when it's hot. Gonna try either some better quality ATF or some magic potion lotion to try stabilize this a bit better when it's hot.

I also need new bushes for the suspension, it's getting creaky.

Went out tonight to put some DeOxit on some contacts (fuse box, fan, brake light bulbs etc) and discovered the master cylinder has barfed out all over the floor and the service brakes are inop.

I'll pull the master off and take it apart to see if it's the bore or the seals and go from there.

Yes sir, same gearbox.

Easily recognizable by the "N - Dr - Lo --- R" shift pattern.

Not having a lot of luck with this beast Phil.  I am sure you will get to the bottom of all the issues however and it's truly inspiring when you look back and see how much has been done already.

Well, that's the thing. The car was driven, not serviced, not maintained then left to sit.

Then I got it, and pushed it back into service. Everything that needed to break is now breaking!

This was in today's mail.

Work may now progress, until I'm finished, then it can stop.

Drums are/can be self-servo, that is leading shoes pull themselves on(not rolling backwards though, which can result in embarrassment).

Correct, these are self energizing brakes, they do work quite well.

Built the master up on the bench. I thought the lid was plastic, it's not. It's metal with a nice copper washer.

Bolted it in. It is amongst the most simple of masters I've ever had to change.

Crappy picture but the brake pedal is now adjusted to the correct height.

Started readjusting the shoes and ran out of time. I'll try get it bled tomorrow.

Thank you Hashtag Hairnet for the new years' gift- a fantastic Junkyard Digs teeshirt and a couple stickers!

Brakes bled today if I can convince Glamorous Assistant it's not too cold to be doing it.
