PhilA Posted April 24, 2023 Author Posted April 24, 2023 Tweaked the carb a touch. Fuel economy is better. Plugs look good. Happy with that. Phil Tickman, Dan_ZTT, EightMegs and 6 others 9

Most of that is from a high speed run yesterday (55-60) where it'll definitely have been on the main jets. I need to do a 35 mph run where the mix is primarily dictated by the idle circuit. hairnet Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 someone happy with 14 mpg hehe would have to put a hole in the tank to do that here
PhilA Posted April 26, 2023 Author Posted April 26, 2023 150 mile round trip today. A mixture of back roads at a sedate pace, which the car likes. Also up on the big roads playing in traffic. Managed that well though it's developed a vibration that I need to check on. Hopefully just a propshaft uj. Back_For_More, EightMegs, LightBulbFun and 2 others 5
PhilA Posted April 27, 2023 Author Posted April 27, 2023 Rear wheel had shifted slightly, reseated it and that seems to have stopped the wobble. On the flip side it dropped maybe half a pint of transmission fluid on the floor when I parked it up. It was hot! If it doesn't leak, there's no oil in it.
PhilA Posted April 27, 2023 Author Posted April 27, 2023 Went to the grocery store tonight. Seems that I have blown the cobwebs out of the engine, it's all smooth now, more torque. Accelerates much better. Phil Tepper, Garythesnail, mercedade and 10 others 13
PhilA Posted May 20, 2023 Author Posted May 20, 2023 One last drive this evening. Parked it up, pulled the fuses ready for us to go on vacation. LightBulbFun 1

PhilA Posted July 13, 2023 Author Posted July 13, 2023 Starter motor has taken to not working recently. Been putting off actually doing anything about it, mostly because access to undo the bolts is a pain. That and it's been too hot to drive and I've been putting the hours in on the Plymouth. I need to stop being a lazy git. mercedade 1
PhilA Posted July 14, 2023 Author Posted July 14, 2023 Bought a new, wonky ⅝" wrench and liberated the starter motor. Took the inspection cover off and a tablespoon of trash fell out. Oh dear. Commutator looks ugly. Reason: That's one of the brushes, about ¼" shorter than minimum. Cleaned up the commutator, fitted one random new brush I knew I had spare and went ordered 4 new brushes which'll be in tomorrow (grand total $4, not bad). PhilA Posted July 15, 2023 Author Posted July 15, 2023 New brushes appear to have been lost in the post. Maybe they'll be in tomorrow. Starter continues to work though, which is nice.
PhilA Posted July 15, 2023 Author Posted July 15, 2023 One of the bolts holding the rear bumper on fell off. WTF. Going to have to find a matching one now. Ran a wire, put a switch and a relay. Can now switch the rear suspension compressor on from the driver's seat. Far too hot for this, really. 37° out and it's gone 5pm. Starter motor brushes have been lost in the AutoZone ether. Maybe Monday they'll arrive. Their system shows they are in transit. Phil
hairnet Posted July 15, 2023 Posted July 15, 2023 thought straight 8 was smooooth? how come the starter brush had a chunk gone - thats not a wear surely? is something else eating it? will that happen to the new one?

It is smooth- but that's a lot of torque it needs- the starter is turning both the engine over and is also driving the first motion shaft and the torus in the gearbox, plus the primary pump. It just wore out from use, no chunks missing, just worn away. The commutator polished up okay and the bit that wore out will no longer be in contact so will be good also. Phil
PhilA Posted July 20, 2023 Author Posted July 20, 2023 Brushes arrived, after having been ordered a second time. Went stop at Harry's to get poboys. Phil Rust Collector, LightBulbFun, Back_For_More and 4 others 7
PhilA Posted July 20, 2023 Author Posted July 20, 2023 I think I got my money out of the old one. The wear section is the part with the parallel edges. Oops. adw1977, GrumpiusMaximus, Tickman and 4 others 5 2

This place no. Park up, walk to the window and order. Some drive ins have it where they'll bring your food out to your car, that's where they'll keep the novelty of skates going. PhilA Posted August 23, 2023 Author Posted August 23, 2023 The most exceptional shiny mayfair yellow. I've just been driving mine places. Adjusted the carb yesterday, the mixture had wandered and it was stumbling at idle when hot. Tightened the fan belt a touch also. Apart from that it's been running real well. 14mpg us (17uk) which is impressive, getting recommended manufacturer fuel economy 70+ years on! Phil Crackers, RayMK, Back_For_More and 4 others 7
