PhilA Posted March 16, 2019 Author Posted March 16, 2019 Nice afternoon today, so I took a little time to try finish one thing up. Filter element assembly. Started cleaning it up. Got it all scrubbed down nice. Stuffed it full of new filter mesh. And painted it black again. Phil paulplom, Burnside, DeeJay and 5 others 8
PhilA Posted March 17, 2019 Author Posted March 17, 2019 All parts of the air filter together. The filter mesh makes a fair difference. Even with no oil in the intake is now all but silent. Phil Skizzer, Squire_Dawson, paulplom and 4 others 7
LightBulbFun Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 Shiny engine looking very nice! out of curiosity what sort of carburettor does it have? im guessing its transmission time next?
PhilA Posted March 17, 2019 Author Posted March 17, 2019 Twin barrel Carter. Looks like a single barrel, it's sneaky. Gearbox next, yes. Then painting bits as I feel like it/take it all back apart. Phil LightBulbFun 1
LightBulbFun Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 ah cool that also answers my question, if you where going to do anything about the exhaust manifold im looking forward to seeing work on the gearbox because if nothing else, everyone iv asked in the past how does an automatic gearbox work, iv basically been told dont ask/its black magic
Squire_Dawson Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 Good stuff. Sidevalve inline engines are generally very quiet runners, does it have a timing chain or constant mesh gears? You will not be able to hear it run most of the time, like my MO the only noise is the fan over 50 MPH, going downhill it increases in pitch so it sounds like a WWII fighter plane. The other benefit of SV engines is they run for longer periods without needing adjustment. LightBulbFun and PhilA 2
PhilA Posted March 17, 2019 Author Posted March 17, 2019 Timing chain on this one, so again pretty quiet. The original fan is gone, replaced with a six blade affair which passes one hell of a lot of air, even at idle. Phil LightBulbFun 1
PhilA Posted March 17, 2019 Author Posted March 17, 2019 I have discovered how difficult it is to match the paint. Also discovered that the blue used in the back door is a Krylon color because I saw it on the shelf. I picked up a pale blue-gray for the windshield washer frame, and something moderately close for in the engine bay where the firewall needs to be rubbed down and repainted. It's a bit rusty down underneath- while the engine and gearbox are out I'm going to treat and paint. Phil DeeJay 1
Momentary Lapse Of Reason Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 Any idea what the 5 something 2 8 refer to?
PhilA Posted March 17, 2019 Author Posted March 17, 2019 Yes, deluxe/Starmist blue That is also stamped into the body plate. That's the chinagraph pencil writing of whoever signed the body off at Fisher. I'm going to try keep it. Phil Scruffy Bodger, egg, Skizzer and 7 others 10
PhilA Posted March 17, 2019 Author Posted March 17, 2019 Today was quiet, overcast, cool. Painted the screen wash bottle holder a much more appropriate color. It should be a mid gray, I decided on a pale blue-gray. French Blue isn't a terrible color match so that'll likely be on there firewall just to cheer it up. I figured better that than red and white checker. Rust treatment on the front frame brace. I'll let that dry and then it can be painted. Phil Burnside, egg, LightBulbFun and 2 others 5
PhilA Posted March 18, 2019 Author Posted March 18, 2019 Looking at it, I don't see a way to save the writing and still be able to properly protect the metal. So, I'll going to thoroughly photograph it for posterity. Restoration isn't preservation, so this will halt the rust and preserve the vehicle for the future. Phil danthecapriman, Saabnut, Asimo and 6 others 9
Squire_Dawson Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 I see the little horn. Is the bracket to the right of it for another horn? When you get chance, horn video please. Best I ever heard were the twin Delco horns fitted to a Victor F, proper low rock n' roll note. LightBulbFun 1
PhilA Posted March 18, 2019 Author Posted March 18, 2019 That one is a parts-store special. It goes "beep". The proper horns should be Lucas Windtones. I need a pair of 12V ones for it. That's going to be nice and cheap* because Jaguar/Land Rover tax. Phil LightBulbFun 1
LightBulbFun Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Lucas in American Big iron? was not expecting that
PhilA Posted March 18, 2019 Author Posted March 18, 2019 I had a bit of a discussion on the Blue about paint. I didn't think about it- I'm going to see if I can find the same color dark blue as the roof and paint the firewall that color instead. I cannot match the pale blue. Plus this is good because it's not going to be a tidemark of not-quite against it, as that blue stops at the top of the screen. Phil Burnside 1

LightBulbFun Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 since Zel fitted a big horn to his Invacar you should fit an Invacar horn, can you imagine people expecting a big loud horn, only to get a little "Meep Meep!"
tooSavvy Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Vectra C horns are nice & loud.Actually.... I was struck by 'originality/sounds of the 60's/scene tax' concerns and did ask myself "WTF sounds like the QE2 and is in the breakers today?" Looks like we have our answer.....
PhilA Posted March 18, 2019 Author Posted March 18, 2019 But are they high pitch or low pitch? The original horns are low, overall. Woleseley used this model of horn. They go FARRRRRRP in a gentlemanly fashion. They are not uncouth. Plus they are on show in the engine bay as a feature; I want to try get the original shape ones. Phil Burnside and LightBulbFun 2
PhilA Posted March 18, 2019 Author Posted March 18, 2019 They aren't overly bad. I have a pair of very loud Fiamm horns on my Jeep (standard equipment) but they are rather brash. Phil tooSavvy and Burnside 2
Momentary Lapse Of Reason Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Windtones were fitted to a number of smaller cars such as A30 and Morris Minor so searching for them as those cars should turn them up without added scene tax. There are some on UK e-bay at the moment at £12/13 each.Plenty people on here would get them for you and forward to get around the "won't ship to USA" problem.(some might even deliver!)
PhilA Posted March 18, 2019 Author Posted March 18, 2019 Thankfully my parents still reside in the UK, so I have a go-to. I'll have to take a look to see, because 12V ones are hard to get here. They go for strong money, too. OMG JAGUAR XJ120 WORTH MUCH COIN Phil
PhilA Posted March 18, 2019 Author Posted March 18, 2019 I see a good (well, they need shining up) pair, does anybody know how to identify the 6/12/24 volt ones from external inspection? Phil
busmansholiday Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 I see a good (well, they need shining up) pair, does anybody know how to identify the 6/12/24 volt ones from external inspection? PhilStick 12v battery on it. If it goes bang it was 6v, if it doesn't work it's either 12 or 24v. Saabnut, tooSavvy, DSdriver and 1 other 4
PhilA Posted March 18, 2019 Author Posted March 18, 2019 Unhelpful if I've just spent money on the things that I really didn't need to? Phil
Squire_Dawson Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Take the cover off. It's only held in place by a single grubscrew. There is likely to be a sticker inside with the voltage stated. This Pontiac would undoubtedly have left the factory with Autolite or AC Delco horns, high and lo note working together. I have a Clear Hooters low note here someone has pinched a contact from, I will eventually repair as it promises to be a real manly bellower.
PhilA Posted March 18, 2019 Author Posted March 18, 2019 That's what I thought but it came with Lucas horns.
