‘New’ car pick up...

Recommended Posts

Met a guy about a month ago and got talking cars (as you do) and it turns out he has a classic stuffed away in a field on his property...

I don’t have space for it, but another friend just down the road from me has the space and talent to do it justice :D

It’s a little over an hour away but with the promise of a fun drive with a good friend and some car hauling at the end of it, I’m chomping at the bit, waiting for him to finish work.

It’s 87F here with 90% humidity and I’m about to drag a car out of a field...

‘Whiskey’ plates - given to drivers, once they are allowed back on the road after a drink driving offense. All plates that start with a ‘W’.

That an old ambulance?

It’s actually an armor plated ex-navy bomb squad car.

Didn’t realize until we were ‘rolling’. :D

Sportomatic? My dream 911 has always had two pedals.

Jaysus, that's some find!

Great colour, hope it's being kept.

That was the same as mine, they are a lot of fun and prices are completely nuts on them now.

In a land full of gorgeous old American motors, he had to buy a Beetle GTi

It's a sick world we live in

My friend isn’t really the internet type. He has amazing mechanic skills but not so much on computers :)

I think he would rather be in the garage playing.

Funnily enough, the place we stopped with the lotus single seater and e-type had a 911 sportomatic in there. The guy that owns the store has also owned those cars (including the sporto) for some time. I just noticed on this visit, that he was starting to sell some of his collection off...

The underside of the field find needs rust repair. New floors and fronts of the rockers. Otherwise, with a new set of wings and some uneaten seats, looks to be a good proposition. Wish I had the space and kahoonies to have taken it on, but my garage is at bursting point at the moment.

As for a Beetle gti, I get it. There are some pretty amazing ‘Merican muscle cars out there. I’ve been tempted a few times, but never quite pulled the trigger. A Willy’s pickup, very nearly happened, but the guy wouldn’t stick to a price. An early mustang saloon nearly happened this spring as well - a guy at work had it restored and owned it for a few years but decided he wanted a new Harley trike, but I couldn’t part with $5k for it (doh!)

I’ll try and make up for it with some photos of my local drive in this week. It won’t be absolution, but perhaps if I post them, you will maybe let me off this time :D

There’s another GTI beetle out there, this time in a barn, but right now, I’m a ways off what the owner wants for it.

Got to laugh. When I got home, my wife told me, she had been at the same kids party while I was away as my friends wife. They got to talking...

Turns out she had no idea we were picking up a ‘new’ car today - until my wife Let the cat out of the bag.

Glad I wasn’t in his shoes when he got home!!!
