An old 88... that's a piano isn't it :)

Comically vague steering was standard on old American cars.

Excellent purchase, how was the road trip? (I may have missed that bit)

Uneventful...............picked it up from a guy in Hayle [Cornwall] chopped in my Consul at a fistful of folding..............300 mile round trip!. She drove back fine..............another small issue is that original fuel tank is long gone, and the replacement only holds about 8 gallons [albeit that it's very well made] something else to be sorted.............

Just had this up on the ramp.........rock solid everywhere!  However, pretty much every joint in the front suspension / steering, has a bit of play in it, all of which adds up 4" of play at the steering, and a somewhat crashy ride.........front end kit ordered....and it's getting bagged...............apart from that, no FTP's, and 19 m.p.g !

I completely, thoroughly (and predictably) approve.   Wonderful.

After a morning of industrial strength steering, me and my whizz mechanical genius [Arran, 0774727nine3 95, brilliant at old school stuff, Taunton area] have managed to reduce what was 4" of play in the steering to a far more acceptable 2", just be adjusting stuff............also had the "conversation" with D.V.L.A. ref 40 year old MOT exemption..............they referred me to the D.V.S.A.....who referred me to the D.V.L.A........two things are apparent........if you get stopped by plod, if you wave form V112 at them you'll be fine.....however, if you get picked up by an ANPR, you might get something through the post trying to prosecute you for no MOT.................another fine display of joined up legislation by Her Madge's gummerment

Further to the above, just have conversation with local plod..........who have told me that all ANPR "pulls" are vetted before a letter goes out...so that's alright then..we'll see.........

Good good good. Of all the things making you acutely aware you're in an old car sloppy steering is the worst. At cruising speeds this becomes incredibly tiresome and fatiguing; I don't know how Americans managed with their straight roads and steering boxes... it's one of the reasons I favour Nuffield products and others with rack and pinion setups.

I  more Nuffield products did not  have R/P then did.

Only when you get into BLMC and later was R/P more popular, after the Maxi.

It should be the law that all vehicles should have a V8.......

I did my best - have owned 2 RR classics with the 3.5 on carbs, and a Discovery with same engine...the Discovery beat the RR fuel economy by 10Mpg..18 opposed to 8 in the RR's.. weird all manuals too!!!

agreed..................all Daimlers should be V8s though....!

Not that I disagree, nor do I disapprove of Jaguar straight 6 engines (especially the XK!), but Jaguar really should have at least allowed the Daimler V8 from the Majestic Major be an option on the big Jags.

Imagine a mk10 or XJ with that engine in it! A Majestic Major is one of my bucket list cars!

Sorry to hear that.

Sadly sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.
