Good days out sometimes mean that you have to start early, and take to the sky.

Next came an unphotographed German train, and a similarly unphotographed tram.

Anyway, to the cars.

Volvo's were just inside the door.

Thinking of going next year, any recommendations for hotels etc. Looks like we need to go via Birmingham or that there London.

What's parking like at the venue?  Reasonable, or NEC-style robbery?

Are you thinking of driving to this Dave? I looked into it but both the drive to Dover or the 15 hour ferry trip  from Newcastle put me off.

I can't comment on the parking as I have always (well twice) attended by flying / train / tram. Which was no problem at all.

However the entry price was agreeably reasonable compared to the NEC. Would totally recommend the show.

We picked our hotel at random last year and it was OK, but not so great that I would recommend. In any case there must be loads of places a few tram stops away in central Essen.

It's certainly a possibility.

I'm considering a trip to the Ring in April next year, so could possibly coincide that with this...

Been a few times. Only once drove to the venue (mistake - big queues for the car parking and big hole in the wallet) and only once stayed in Essen at a miserable chain hotel. Most stuff in Essen is already booked up for 2019 by now.

But - being Germany - public transport works and is cheap and reliable. We usually stay in Oberhausen - good hotel and a brew pub in the centre - and with 30 minutes and one change from the main Oberhausen train station you're at the Metro underneath the show. Advance tickets mean you can walk straight past the queues.

Best of all is the sheer size of the thing; most car events in the UK are (for me) done within 3 hours or so. Here (getting in at 0930) you realise you haven't seen everything by 1700. By which time you're knackered.

And if you're lucky, the posh Swiss classics dealers will let you onto their stand so you can gawp at their Bentley Continental(s) - possible the cheapest cars they have at a mere 500,000 euros.

I have just booked my flight through the mighty Loganair. £150 return Glasgow/Dusseldorf. Out on Friday 12th back Sunday 14th.

Are they anything like the late Tony Crook?
