Observer Car Description Game!

Recommended Posts

I dont know if this will work out or not but here goes:

I have a collection of those little Observer’s Book Of Automobiles from the 50s and 60s and for each car there is a description of its appearance... so why not make a game out of it.

I am going to type in the description of a car for you guys to guess what it is. I’m going from my 1964 guide.

Let’s start easy:

1. Unusual rear roofline; note how the roof rakes forward. Rounded bonnet, thrust-forward headlights, straight through wing line. Disc wheels have large plain hubcaps.

Ford Anglia?

EDIT: Max is probably righter!

RE_EDIT: Or maybe not...!

Right, next one.

2. Rounded car with small oval thrust-forward radiator air-intake. Headlamps faired into the body; straight through wing line to rounded tail. Massive flutted bumpers have vertical overriders. Rear wheels particularly enclosed. Perforated disc wheels standard, wire wheels optional

3. Headlamps at full-width radiator air-intake; half moon side indicator lamps above headlamps. Wrap around windscreen, curved roof line, wrap around rear window. Note flattened fin treatment at rear and vertical tail light clusters. Perforated disc wheels with large domed hubcaps.

(Ok, bit harder here but more chod like)

4. Wide radiator air-intake has inwardly veed square-mesh grille. Note how the bonnet line tucks under above intake. Large headlamps; straight through wing line to separate rear wings which house oval tail-lamp clusters in trailing edges. Note rather unusual utility like body with windows extending up to the roofline and unusual two tone colour scheme. Perforated disc wheels have large hub caps

That's really tricky. I keep thinking of cars that almost match but have one major detail different. Frustrating!

^ that's a 312 by the way

I was thinking more this:

The camping version of the 311/312 series?

That’s exactly what it is! (‘Windows extending up to the roofline’). I’m very impressed!

The 1963 edition, you mean!

No, no. My edition says 1964... though I know some cars are out of date (especially if they weren’t on sale in the country at the time)

Sorry, MiniMort my suggestion was aimed  SoapDistant who claimed insider information!

Heh! Not that kind of insider information! I just know my Wartburgs, that's all. Anyway, my only observers book of cars is from 1972.

Shame the Observers books don't exist anymore.  They could probably just put in one description for the whole lot:

Car is massive.  Note how rear windows taper to a point resulting in very limited visibility.  Huge alloy style wheels on very narrow section tyres, tyres appear almost non-existent.  Front lights reach backwards to meet bottom of front windows, note angled rake of windscreen and very thick 'A' pillar.  Car has angry 'pouting' look.  Note various creases in bodywork and other pointless styling excesses.

Last two sentences could also describe some of the women I have seen in them too.
