Pug 305 and hangers on

Hi and thanks for having me along. First to introduce my most shiteworthy car, the 305 van. Currently awaiting fitment if a replacement engine ... (does anyone know a good place to get replacement water hoses for these?)

 

Daily duties temporarily being filled by the 406 - surprisingly nice. Going soon to be replaced by a 306 gti, I hope.

 

And a photo of my (now sold) 205 xs which started the pug frenzy last year.

Didn't realise there had been a previous user with my name, perhaps I should change it. Thanks to Tom and Paul for your help with the 305 so far - I have new top and bottom hoses but it's the rest of them I'm looking for now. With the engine out it was clear they were all hanging on by the skin of their teeth. I'm not sure which ones are model specific, and which are on all xuds.

I've actually never owned a Peugeot but lots of relatives have so I have a sort of collective fondness for them.  Ta for nostalgia.

Anyway, the 406 has now been sold to a man who is going to send bits of it to Nigeria, and who drove it into his transit in a manoeuvre which looked extremely sketchy to me.

 

It has been replaced by a 306 gti6, which has really surprised me by feeling more like a scaled-up 205 than a scaled-down 406. Hopefully it’s not shite.

That does look sketchy! They love 406’s and 307’s out there and in particular auto petrol versions which are extremely rare over here now because.....they’ve all gone for export....

 

There is a Peugeot factory in Nigeria so parts are in abundance coupled with the fact petrol is ridiculously cheap why would you own a loud rattly diesel...they say!

He said that they love the petrols. To get to the point you can see in the picture he had to take a run up, because the clutch wasn’t too good. I was taking a photo but moved further away because I didn’t want to get hit by a falling car.

Good engines, tyres and batteries are all hard to come by in various parts of Africa and as a car is rarely fucked enough for it to be scrapped out there, spare sparts are in quite a demand. They used to be be scared of diesels out there due to the complexities of the pumps but they are starting to get into them. Petrol Peugeots are well respected out there.

I used to send a lot of stuff out to the Gambia but the chap I was dealing with has vanished.

Quick update for anyone with old Peugeots. I was having trouble finding various hoses for the 305 but as I am a member of Peugeot club uk I decided to try their free parts finder service. It turns out that this consists of a very nice man who has access to the Peugeot dealers’ parts database for the whole of Europe. He has found most of the parts I need, struck really reasonable deals with garages in Austria and Germany (maybe others too), bought the parts and had them sent to his house where he’s collated then and forwarded them to me. All out of love of pugs! Amazing!

 

I also have a bit of a numberplate dilemma which I thought I’d ask advice on. I bought a 306 with Irish reg YAZ 4554 which I really don’t like the look of. It bugs me and looks like a naff attempt at a private plate. I know the dvla will swap for a age related plate if I surrender the plate, for free. But I know some people actually like putting these numbers on their cars and similar plates are advertised do a few hundred. So do I pay £80 to put it in retention in the hope of maybe selling it for £150 and getting a bit of free money? Does anyone actually buy them? Anyone want to swap me for a normal numberplate?

Have you tried http://www.peugeotcitroenrepairs.co.uk ? They seem to have recently rebranded online (has Dean, the bloke in charge for a good few decades, retired and let his son take the helm?) - but they have a hell of a lot of stock, and a few important people in CPUK speak really highly of them. At a price... But I picked up new factory front and rear wings for my 309 a couple of years ago from Dean (and where else are they going to be found?? I just need a restorer now!).

I love that 405. They look great fully loaded with all the kit like that. When my 305 is back I’ll put some more pictures up.

 

Yes, it is Ian Kirkwood. What a legend. I have bought from Dean Hunter before too, in fact he sold me a brand new 305 rear light for the van, as well as some other bits. As you say, not sure where you’d find one of those lights nos now, and also as you point out, it was expensive at about 25% of what I paid for the car! He rang me back once and confused me for another customer, asking if I still wanted a vac pump for my Visa. It made me realise that he must deal with some true shiters all day every day.

Glad you found Dean Hunter (his surname eluded me ) as well as Ian Kirkwood, as sources of parts. I plan to be on the CPUK stand at "cars in the park" at Lichfield as well as at the CPUK National - whether in the 205 or 309 I am not sure (they are both brown!) - but please do say "Hello" to me if you are there .

Another shout out for Dean Hunter, he saved my life recently by having a rear caliper carrier for my 405 daily, would have been stuffed without him.  Not the cheapest but he runs a business, not a club.

I've had a few things from Dean and wasn't happy.

 

Used heater matrix that was clogged up. £75.

 

Gearbox that syncro in second was fucked. £80.

 

Exterior  window rubbers that turned out to be interior. £30.

 

After that I will only use him when all else fails.

 

D Spares is my first call for stuff.

There's millions out there for very little cost, unless it spells something resembling a name then nobody will buy it.

Well I should have said, of course I would recommend D Spares too! I've sent the v5 off to the DVLA now with a letter asking to surrender it and swap for an age-related UK one, so we'll see what I get.

you need to seach the interwebs for a Yaz Assa and see if he/she wants a nice private plate

Peugeot got crap after they stopped using the 104 chassis for their smaller hatches, which the 106, 205, 306 as well as the Citroen Visa and ZX are all derived from, so it should feel like a massive go-kart and give plenty of smiles per gallon. The Horizon-derived 309 chassis was pretty good as well. 

 

For 305 parts I know German Swedish French still cater for the older Pug models, the 305 is still in their parts search online. I'm not sure where you're based but you could also try an independent breakers & spares specialist called Frogbits in Maidstone, Kent. Whether they offer a courier service I don't know.

The last time I wrote something into my 405 thread was on 7 September last year.

One of the biggest problems with them from a shiter's point of view is that there just isn't anything to report.

They just start up in the morning and do their daily job until you switch them off at night, day in, day out, every day.

 

Why a discussion spanning several pages erupts on this forum every time somebody asks that retarded question

which cheap car to buy that has to be a reliable egg laying woolmilkpig will forever elude me.

 

I also called on Dean Hunter a couple of times and yes, he is "expensive", but given what few bits you actually need

for a 405, it doesn't really matter.
