Urgent Vag help please

So I'm in the ultra* reliable mk3 Golf and I've broken down in Sheffield. I'm fairly sure it's the ECU relay, a common fault on these. What I need to know is, can I temporarily seal it with another relay to get me home, if so, which one?

Oral sex** and beer to anybody who can help!

Wallop it a few times, that might fix it. If any of the others in the fuse box physically fit then they will most likely work.

And if not, bridge the switched pins with some wire. They're the two opposing ones that are at 90 degrees to each other, eg

I I I

Join the top and bottom pins

if it is a normal 4 spade relay, jump pins 30 and 87 I think to send current direct.

Relay is there to protect sensitive components from high current.

And yes probably any relay will work BUT there may be a constant drain even with ignition off so pull the "get you home" relay when home

Surely just hammer a smaller ECU relay over the original

Or failing that, hammer a Scirocco/Corrado over your Goof and drive home in style*.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did think that another relay would do it but am slightly confused as to why they have different part numbers and are different colours, I guess something to do with the rating.

I had one of my wee ones with me and the car was overhanging a bus lane in the dark, so I've left it for tonight and decided to pick it up tomorrow, wish me luck please!

When mine did this I was within walking distance of where I live, so I went back a couple of hours later and it ran again, due to dry joints in relay.

Yep, while I was waiting for the lovely Mrs Spart to pick us up I read this on the international net of lies. Had it just been me I would have probably gone and 'done something' for a couple of hours and gone back to it but Lettie, my daughter was getting bored and chilly and I had to pick her sister up at 7.30.

I'm hoping to be able to pick up the correct relay tomorrow, I'll drive up there, fit it, and if it sorts it then I'll leave the car somewhere safe until I can get a lift back to pick it up.
