Decent 13 Inch Wheel Trims: What and Where To Buy?

I'd like some new trims to replace the horrible ones on my Dai-shat-su Charade.

 

Would prefer solid ones with just a gap for the valve, no spoke type things.

 

Any suggestions?

^ those are really good quality trims, I've got a set of the plain chrome ones.  Pretty strong and a good snug fit, at least on the Princess.  The only issue is that they're so good a fit and so smooth you need a trim tool to prise them off.

Is there any danger of brakes getting insufficiently cooled with full covers?   Probably one for the SQ Amnesty thread but I keep seeing warnings about this on T25s....

That's an interesting question I think. I have occasionally wondered just how much cooling relies upon the vents in a Wheeltrim. I don't think it can be that much because the discs aren't enclosed anyway (pretty open behind the wheel) and if the heat generated by the discs was that high, surely the wheeltrims on cars would start to show signs of melting?

 

I'd pop the trims on and drive normally. If brake fade suddenly develops then it's time for a trim change. Although I do think that if full width trims created braking issues, somebody on a forum somewhere would be justifying how rear ending someone wasn't their fault because their wheeltrims caused brake failure. Such a thing may exist but I can't be arsed to look. Actually I am going to have a look now

I have searched the T25 forum and there are references to it specifically with those vans.   Brake fluid temperature getting high, it seems.    Having said all that, seeing stuff go flat out in Lake Muroc or Bonneville with Moons on tends to suggest its definitely not a problem on every vehicle....   

 

Anyway, as you were - those chrome smoothie jobs do look the biz and lift the looks of  a modern car nicely

I think the holes in the wheels/trims is to let the heat of the brakes out.

Not to let cool air in.

It probably a bit of both though.

There is definite logic behind the idea that enclosing the wheels will lead to higher temps, but how it affects things in the real world is potentially an interesting little experiment. Something for someone like Ed China to have a look at!

Remember kids, wheels are vented for a reason. Worst case, Mickey Mouse pads stop working where the surface gasses when things get a bit hot and you mow down multiple kitty cats, add worn down pads allowing easier path for heat to boil manky old brake fluid with a high moisture content, and now the pedal goes to the floor while you're also bouncing numerous nuns off your bonnet. Probably makes little difference on a maintained vehicle, and I suspect Citroen wheels were unvented because the silly tarts forgot they weren't putting the brakes inboard anymore.

If I have sudden catastrophic brake failure in the Princess I'll be sure to let everyone know it was my trims what did it.  Any time the VW crowd says "this thing made this problem happen" I assume they're talking out of their arse and firing off excuse to deflect attention from their lack of mechanical sympathy.

Hillman IMP drivers... who have braved the vagaries of foreign climes... state that all-in-one pressed 'sporty' alloy covers [not hubcaps] will cause rapid loss* of braking on descents..!!

 

*..until pongged into the front boot...
