Hmm. Close escape?

Frontera burst its rear brake pipe as I was about to hitch it up and drive home. Literally as I put foot on brake to release handbrake and leave. Loaded avec wife and kids etc. Bloody good job too.

Now, if only I'd got a large Vxh towcar...oh,wait, my weekend away and traffic disasters delayed/scuppered my plans to purchase a shiny Monterey. Fronterror promptly took umbrage.

Check. Your. Brake. Pipes.

None of this 'it'll do for a bit' stuff.

Indeed. Not nice at all.

Had them go before, especially old crap, but not when about to set off avec kids. Fairly unpleasant moment afterwards.

How much braking were you left with though?   I've never put the dual circuits to test in this way, luckily!

About half of it, but the pedal is really soft.

At least that's my experience.

I do know if a front flexi on a Capri GXL pops when racing an RS2000 into a roundabout , in the wet, the right front still locks up and you spin, quite impressively .

Don't put £25 bent MOTs on 3.0 Capris kids.

Would ,in this case, the caravan brakes help avert disaster in the event it happened barrelling down a mountain pass?

Older 4x4 and light commercials have a front/rear split, as does this one. Rear pipe burst. Fronts now lock horrendously and have a min brake effort. Drove back solo very steadily. Parking brake/engine brake/ light braking. Oooer.

Zero risks taken. Braking commenced far far in advance of any possible hazard.

Not really as they only stop the trailer pushing the car when you use the brakes on the towing vehicle.

So not help but not make it worse really.

Unless how they work has changed recently then no. All the braked trailers I've used rely on the tow car slowing first, then as the trailer pushes on the back of the car it compresses a mech behind the tow hitch that applies the brakes.

The split depends on FWD/RWD/AWD I think.

I believe, as you say 4x4 & RWD have a front/rear split. Fwd spilt diagonally so you get one brake at each end.

Shit Sam, glad you and the family are Ok. Brakes are the worst things to go along with tyres and steering. I remember my wheel fell off at a roundabout on the Mercedes some time back, thankfully at very low speed and I was on my own, the day before I was driving at a speed with a mate of mine down the Halesowen bypass. Makes you think...
