Random street snaps from the 1980's

Now that Trigger's kindly pointed me in the right direction with uploading pics, I might as well bore you all....this one sighted in the Roath area of Cardiff, sometime in 1986:

...and this tatty old S-Type (a 3.4-litre automatic, with red leather trim) was found languishing in the car park of the Terrace Inn (Birchgrove, near Swansea) one summer's evening in 1986. I'm 90% sure the car was later restored and made it back on the road too - maybe it survives, I do hope so.

Your welcome! Glad you sussed it out in the end!.Not good news on the Jag though... :( The enquiry is complete The vehicle details for STX 145F are: Date of Liability 01 02 1991 Date of First Registration 21 06 1968 Year of Manufacture Not Available Cylinder Capacity (cc) 3442CC CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour GOLD Vehicle Type Approval null Lasted a few more years before it's death it looks. And a quick DVLA check on the A60 isn't good neither, Looks like it died in 1986, Still a nice looking car though.

Cheers for checking those two out, Trigger. Not surprised to hear that the A60's a goner, but I thought the Jag might have had half a chance. I wonder if it's rotting away in a lock-up somewhere! I've got hundreds of these pictures from 'back in the day' sitting in the loft - I'll dig them out and upload some of the more interesting ones....

Now that's what I call autoshite. Good stuff. Any more?

Certainly have, monzaE! Another one from the 80's, this time a deliciously buggered Super Minx (a 1965 Series 3 saloon, no less) snapped in a side road in Skewen, Neath one Sunday in 1987. The car was in daily use and I used to chuckle every time I saw it. I remember the bloke who drove it (in his 20's, looked like he was in The Smiths) was fairly bemused when he spotted me taking a picture of his car. Probably thought I was going to report it to the council. And it's behind an early Chevette too.

Early 60's Ford Classic frequently seen parked outside the same house, just off the A470 on the outskirts of Cardiff. Photographed here one Sunday in March 1986. Splendidly homemade paint 'graphics', bumpers removed and snazzy wheels. Bet he used to get Street Machine every month.

With the exception of the Jag, its a shame that NONE of these cars even survived into the following year! Especially the Consul Capri with its 'Classic & Sportscar' sticker in the back window. Very desirable car these days with a price tag to match for a good one.

Wow, Imagine seeing car's like that now on the road, It would never never happen!

Is that a old newpaper hanging out the door skin!:lol:

P.s Don't worry about adding the extra bit when pasting the code from tinypic.com, It's all set up for you when you paste the code to your message.

Another Super Minx, this tidy example seen somewhere in Pontardawe, Swansea c.1986

Saw a pretty young nurse drive off in this Mark 3 Zephyr Four. I was visiting my grandmother, who at the time was in hospital in Bristol. Can't remember which hospital exactly, I was only 11 at the time (March 1986). Nurses don't seem to drive tatty old Zephyrs anymore.

Amber gold Cortina 1600E seen in Leonard Street, Neath c.1987

Cheers Trigger!

Another Super Minx would you believe, this time in Ogmore-by-sea (near Bridgend) one Saturday during the summer of 1987.

Now there is a place that brings back memories, The Terrace Inn  That was a proper spit and sawdust pub - only twice I ever went in the place and trouble was never far away. Much easier to go for a quiet pint down 'The Bowens' :P You seem to be a Neath/Skewen boy from your photos? By chance you dont happen to have any pictures of a Mk1 2 door Cortina in spruce green, complete with hella lamps? Reg no ECY 764C from the Birchgrove/Skewen/Neath Abbey/Neath area in the years 62 to circa 1991 . It use to belong to my grandparents who lived by (the then) co-op in Birchgrove.Keep the pics coming

Cheers Seth. Here's a basic model 105E Anglia, hanging on by a dollop of P38 when I snapped it in the Poole area on a family holiday in either 1986 or 87. Not long for this world I bet.

...and this distinctly dodgy early 60's Sunbeam Rapier was seen in this Daleyesque car lot opposite the 'Tucktonia' amusement ground in Christchurch, Dorset on the same holiday. Pretty sure it was Summer 1987. The car looks better in the picture than it was in reality - plenty of rippling along the lower quarters!

I'm enjoying these!, Love the last shot of the Sunbeam in the garage!.Your right about the 105E, It hasn't been taxed sinced 1989 but the Sunbeam on the other hand lasted until 1998!.

I love this pic. I must admit in the mid 1980s I only paid attention to cars on prefix registrations and must have been oblivious to older yad. Bizarre to see a brand new Escort next to its ancestor, of course if you saw both cars nowadays, the odds are the Anglia would be the pristine one and the mk4 Esc would be rotten half to bits...

Did you notice the driver when taking the photo? :)

Sod the Chick with the perm, What's the silver motor next to the 105e?! *Geek*

I thought mk3 Escort at first, but the nsf wheel suggests a 323 of some sort perhaps?

Good skillz, Front wing does indeed match a Mazda 323.

Given the wheels, it'll be a BD-series 323 GT.

1600E cortina only made it to 1988 according to DVLA. its unthinkable that one as tidy as that would get scrapped now, as in that condition today it would be worth several thousand! Back then though it probably held a value of only a couple of hundred at most.Funny how fashions change. a couple of years ago my mate parked his utterly shagged out E reg sierra 1600L next to my yellow mk3 Cortina GXL and drooled all over it saying he wished he could own a car like mine.I pointed out to him that back in 1987 it would have been the bloke in my cortina, drooling all over his sierra. These are fantastic pictures..keep them coming if you have more!

Somewhat shonky looking 100E Popular, spotted about 100 yards from my aunty's house on the Patchway estate in Bristol, early 1986.

Hunter-shaped Singer Gazelle saloon, no idea where. Probably Swansea c.1986. Must be practically extinct by now.

Its interesting to speculate what happened to a car isnt it? Although it is of course the most likely outcome, I try not to equate "unlicensed" with "scrapped", especially from those pre-SORN days, in the hope that someone somewhere's might have it safely stored away or under resto. Suppose it might have met its end in an accident - and as you rightly point out it wouldn't have had a high value with insurance companies - or maybe the tidy paint was hiding a rotten underside, Polyfilla in the arches, fibreglass/expanding foam/Sunday Sport in the sills, etcWhatever, shame its not on the road, I would love one of those.

Wells Motors...from memoryl I bought loads from him in the late seventies/early eighties when I was living in the area. To be fair, his stuff wasn't that bad, and you did tend to get what you paid for. he did a nice line in dodgy re-sprays.....as long as you didn't mind a sort of sand coloured beige..apparently he had about 200 gallons of the stuff which "fell of the back of a lorry" I think it was probably an MOD camoflage colour.

Anyway, I bought off him;

Morris Minor Woody, PC Cresta, Rover 110, Rover P6, Viva HC estate. and the best a Merc 220 fin tail. All in their "declining years", but all of them did the job without too many disasters.

What a top set of motors, bet it was an interesting place back then! Cheers for sharing that, colc! Here's another shot of aforementioned befinned Rootesmobile at Wells Motors (again, probably Summer 1987):

And this pair of Rover P5B's, both seen in the car park on a family trip to Beaulieu Motor Museum, either 1985 or '86. Nice Skoda in the background too!

Tidy A40 Farina (and an under-appreciated SD1) seen in Ilfracombe, late 1985/early '86

Posted Image

Nice Mark 2 'Tina estate (a 1600 Super, no less) with an HC Viva estate caught in thr background, same day in Ilfracombe 1985/86

Posted Image

Shit the bed, it's a Singer Vogue estate. Rare as you like now. Seen (I think) on the Patchway estate, Bristol, during Summer 1986

The system built housing in the background is pretty cool too! (Same goes for the modernist terrace behind the Ford Classic)
