Renault timing belts are apparently not the loveliest job, I let a garage do mine. I would wash your hands of it, leave her to sort it all out and hopefully she can get the bus for a few weeks.

It's unusual for me to recommend this, but I think it's had its day so tell her to bin it. It's sounds like over the last 10 months of her owning it it's been through the wars, so would have absolutely no sell on value if fixed up.

£50 for a cheap pump & cam belt kit, and bank on a day at least to do it, especially if access is dreadful.

Well, she only passed her test a year ago, her husband doesn't drive, and I didn't give her an exhaustive list of which faults can be safely driven around and which ones require stopping the car as soon as possible and getting it recovered, so I do think she genuinely didn't know any better. It's a moot point anyway, as the fault is the water pump, and the difficulty of replacing it is what is writing off the car, rather than any resultant damage to the engine (which judging by how it ran when we started it up might actually be OK, though the oil looked a bit burnt!  ) .

In that case I would just help her get another car, the Megane doesn't sound like it is worth your time, even if there is no engine damage. It sounds like it has had a bit of a hard time all round.

As is always the way, there are always loads of lovely cars for sale on here when I don't need one, and not much at the moment .

 

Anyway sounds like the end of the road for this Megane then, so like I say if anyone needs any parts then if I can remove them without specialist tools I will, I would only want postage or could store any normal sized bits until the 'buyer' can collect. Most body panels are damaged, one rear light cluster broken, everything else in reasonable fettle.

As someone who spent most of April crying under a late-90s Renault (also pissing water and top-end knocking in an alarming manner), I can advise that it was a frustrating, despondent and altogether Very Bad experience that I wouldn't wish on Eamonn Holmes. And after all that effort, it ended up on the back of a beavertail anyway.

 

Save yourself the despair, man. Change your phone number and deny you ever had anything to do with it.

 

Then enjoy the summer unencumbered by a dead/dying Renner.

If I was looking for another car I'd be on it, but the current owner of this Megane has managed to ding pretty much every corner of it so god knows what would happen if you put her in something Safrane sized!

 

In any case, although it seems details are hard to come by, it looks as if our beloved Mayor is going to attempt to improve the air quality situation in Inner London by extending the Low Emission Zone for cars out to the boundaries of the South Circular some time next year; she lives outside it but works within it, so on that basis I'm recommending she buys a Euro IV petrol car. I've suggested a Mk2 Focarse but she'd just sent me a link to a Mk6 Fester which would be a good call given most of her mileage is commuting on her own.

Mk2 focus a good shout, find one with the Ti-vct on the 1.6 if possible. More torque and slightly better on fuel. All of the 1/4/1.6 are prone to leaking screenwash onto the plug recess.

If you trace the cars lineage, you get Renault Megane, Renault 19, Renault 11, and then Renault 14.

 

An Ancestry.co.uk kit would confirm that your car is, in fact, a little bit R14 which must be a selling point?

Spec seems odd though, velour seats but keep fit rear windows?

Looking at it on ETIS it doesn't look like it was optioned up. Seems a shame it hasn't got a heated windscreen, it's a bit odd that it's "less AV jack" and for a new driver I'd prefer it if it wasn't "Less Electronic Stability Control". Am I asking a bit much at that price?
