Evening,

I've just had a text from a friend who is planning on going to buy this tomorrow:

She's not willing to wait for anyone to come and look at it with her but as she's had a bit of a hard time lately I'd like to try and avoid her being stitched up. I'm guessing the 2.5d is fairly old school and robust but rust is likely to be an issue. Anything I should be getting her to look at specifically, bearing in mind she's nowhere near being one of us? Ta, AS.

Rust - sills , rear spring hangers and front chassis legs where the subframe bolts on. Oh and inner sills / floor .

Gearboxes are weak , top strut mounts ( clonking when turning lock to lock ) are a twat to change .

In case nobody's mentioned it already, look out for rust.  Also, they eat gear linkages and CV joints.  The 2.5 isn't too bad but IIRC has at least one belt at each end of the engine, which might make replacement interesting...

Might be a moot point now, but +1 on rust.  These are a bastard - they can look pristine from the outside and be as rotten as buggery underneath.  At least with a Transit or a Vito you can normally see the grot a mile off.

2.5D will be the older Fiat / Iveco Sofim engine, which apparently go "pergle pergle" and which aren't a bad lump really - bit more grunt than a DI Transit, but don't put quite as much strain on the gearboxes as the turbo diesels (although having said that I've seen a few 1905cc NA XUD-powered Sevel vans with knackered 'boxes.

Nice old bus to drive though.

Boxes are often knackered due to water running into the gearbox from off the scuttle panel

Syncros wear too

Strut tops seize up as already mentioned but are quite an easy job really!

Rot on inner sills and outriggers!
