Bollox? Or sneak it round to Arthur foxhakes and hope he doesn't notice he's welding up the wrong one...

Whoever is interested can get in touch, I don't want to force it on anyone, like LDV rape or something.

I'm wondering if a 2.1 12v XUD would fit in this postbus? Bellhousing is the same I think, not sure about mounts. I've also spied a "smokey" Peugeot 405 being broken on eBay. Not sure what would make it smokey though

I think an XUD9TE would be alarming enough and can be tuned easily if you're brave.

Old diesels can be claggy if they've been laid up for a while, could be as simple as a clogged fuel filter or needing a good Italian tune-up.

Yeah, this one has been stood a while. Would a 1994 405 have a Bosch pump without the electronic shizz?

Oh, here's that bus thing I'm getting. It has extra rust proofing from the greneded engine, which is a bonus, kinda.post-388-0-83910100-1487849167_thumb.jpgpost-388-0-83910100-1487849167_thumb.jpg. There are some "I'm crazy, haha" type stickers which will obv have to go.

Turns out the engine is about a mile from the bus, so I can get both at the same time. I'll need to liberate the engine from the 405 donor first though. The seller said I can take the whole lot If I want, but it doesn't have any wheels and I don't have room for it anyway. Does anybody need any 405 bits?

Make it easy for yourself, put the screen through, cut pillars and straight across floor with a angle grinder/ Stihl saw then you have everything you need.

Grinding metal is one of the least pleasant things in human history.

You probably wouldn't like working here then...

Carrying your own gas axe set up might raise a few eyebrows in the event of a random stop, plus there's the fuel lines to burn through...

That is so close to my old van! Y833TDA. Not actually mine obviously, it belonged to Royal Mail same as all the others but twas my responsibility. That brings back a few memories. Was a full van though, didn't have the side windows.

Is there any way of tracing it's history? I'd be interested to find out what it was up to when it was in the hands of RM.

Chopping the front off this 405 does sound like a good plan BUT I need whatever I take to be able to fit in the back of the Pilot. I'm taking an engine hoist and a load of tools. I'm hoping on just dropping the front subframe with the front struts and engine+box. I last used this method on a Pug 406 and the whole lot was apart in about an hour.

The red one does look lush.

Has it got seats in the back?

Should do, but they're missing.

If you lob a 1.9td in I can donate my very modified LDA pin to the cause! And take pictures of the various ways mine has been modified if it helps.

Half a dozen cutting discs, eye protection, 9" angle grinder, extention cable and a friend to help you load up. Simples

I'm not sure if that's any simpler than Lankytim's preferred method, and he'd still have to extricate the engine from the sawn-off front of the car when it's done. Not annoying fucking catchphrase from an insurance advert 5 years ago.

Was thinking that way it would be fast and simple and also no bits that are going to be needed are going to be left behind. Not sure what wiring is required but the engine loom would be complete along with the rads fans ac etc and could be dismantled in comfort and put on one side rather than mad rush scrambling about trying to dismantle stuff.

Annoying catchphrase?

Sorry can't help you there. There might be some sort of records kept but I wouldn't know where to find them. I did once find an old Royal Mail fleet book at a bus rally, should have bought it but didn't. Don't know if it had depot allocations like a bus/rail fleet book would.

I can say that when we get new vans they tend to spend their whole lives at one place. They do at our office anyway. Rarely get second hand vans arrive.

Flew down the M6 and M5 this morning to grab this engine from the 405 donor. First thing I noticed was it was N/A and had a Lucas pump, which is exactly what I didn't want to get. It was cheap enough so I yanked it out anyway. The whole job only took an hour or so. When I drained the coolant lovely blue antifreeze came out followed by a load of oil. Bah! I'm hoping it's the oil cooler that's failed but I guess a head gasket would be pretty easy while the lumps out.

I have to say that the more I drive this old Sherpa the better it gets. it don't think the previous owner drove very far, or fast but it seems to be getting quieter and smoother. Cruises at 65- 70 no problem either. It's awesome!

I used to transport a concrete garage the other day too, made a few journey but it really took the weight well. I'm growing to like this van, and it's so useful to have!

To round up a fun morning I also spotted a Marina estate in a breakers yard on the same industrial estate as the 405. Brill!

It's a way of making your car so smoky it won't pass an mot

Yea but you keep the original in the garage/shed and replace it before the mot. That's my plan this year now I know what I'm doing!

Can anyone identify the pump on that 405 lump? You can just about see it if you zoom right in It looks different to the Delphi pump on the red van and the Lucas pump on the white one. Maybe it is a Bosch after all!

But keep it chucking out smoke in the meantime ?Nice

It may not if you tune it right. Don't forget mine was tuned just for smoke, so the fuel was silly high and something else has been fettled. Now it's all been turned down the only time it chucks any smoke out is when I accelerate in too high a gear. Normal driving, nothing. Just thought it might help the large van move forward a bit quicker

If it's smoking off boost then winding the screw in the middle of the 'UFO' out a bit should cure it. Or a slight anti-clockwise turn of the diaphragm underneath.

Both of those will stop it fuelling as much until it's getting enough air to burn it all.
