Yes it's a really nice example of its kind, needing another engine rebuild as soon as poss. Shame to leave it in the garage........broken.

I understand a legal row is underway with Evans, who should be made to foot the bill.

Yup, a buddy of mine did during the summer. Rebuilt 4.2 straight 6 jag engine with about 10 thousand on it..........It started to leak at every single pipe joint on the engine, heater matrix even the temp sender. It searches like fook and we couldn't cure the leaks, then it even found its way past the head gasket. Some research revealed special sealants required and on some engines the head skimmed and block decked to super fine finish..............AVOID.

There seems to be no known way to mankind to prevent people actually pouring snake oil into their engines.

If then the utterly foreseeable and inevitable happens, courts are endeavoured,

despite the entire kerfuffle could have been avoided by merely applying basic common sense.

Q: Does snake oil belong into an engine?

A: Not only does it not, it should be avoided at all cost.

Exception: There are still people around filling Renault's sealed coolant systems of yore with ordinary coolant.

There'll be no snake oil here, only a different kind of crude product.

V5 came today, only took a week.

Totally agree.........but what to do. ?

I have always used neat antifreeze as coolant, even here in S. Cal. I would never dream of putting race engine coolant in a normal car. But the marketing flannel somehow convinced him to put it in his Jag........with unexpected results.

Lesson learnt.....................knowledge shared.

Interesting experience regarding the waterless coolant, thanks for posting.

In hot climates you can surely avoid antifreeze and use soft water plus a corrosion inhibitor? A few of my old books recommend this.

Good job with this, it took me about a month to do my Dolomite 1300's head gasket, admittedly at a leisurely pace...

Still faster than my 3 month effort on the Reliant's

And what exactly is wrong with using what the manufacturer specifies?

Posted

They do specify it. I shake my fist at the industry, should never have moved away from thermo-siphon cooling with massive radiator capacities.

Despite me telling people this at every available juncture it still happens. I was talking to a friend who works in a music shop the other day, he told me about how he's fixed* a water problem on his civic (see - thread relevence! D-series engine) by putting some sort of magic leak stop potion into the water. When I reminded him that I already told him not to do that he explained that it was special HI_QWALITY snake oil, straight from america, no expense spared for him! It isn't using water any more, but the heater has stopped heating.

I asked him if he would like to try my special piano tuning fluid - only one gallon poured into the lid of any piano, organ or harpsichord will fix it with a 100% certainty of never needing tuning ever again.

Done, and cleaned up the bumpers and trim. I'll stick some fuel in and go for a run later on, when it's quietened down.

It moved there by itself!

Good work R-kid!

Well done Ghosty!

Fingers crossed you can actually get out there and use it now.

Jay Chin-o keeps using that waterless crap in loads of his stuff, oh dear, he's going to melt a rare engine very soon I'd bet

Posted

At least if the starter motor packs up you can bump start it easily. ;)  Good work though, hope it proves reliable now and doesn't have its own fog machine in tow.

Depends how much speed you can get up, you can bump some* automatics if you can get them up to 30mph

Mmm, you'll HAB to give us an update on how it drives now it's had a nip and tuck.

Posted

Okay, went out to give it a run, and the alternator belt (new one arriving tomorrow) is screaming worse than a Transit Di. It's hunting because it needs a PCV valve that Old Man knew about but didn't order for no reason at all, and I can't see out of it properly because of the fucked wipers.

Save it for another day.

Props to you and GHOSTY_SNR on a job well done 8)

You might be able to remove the idle control valve and clean it, worked for me with the Rover which is just as well as a replacement is £JOHNCLEESENOISES.  Since yours is the reliable Honda variant, this might not be the case, of course.  Don't fit modern aero blades, they'll be rubbish, stick to the old fashioned ones which are vastly cheaper and perfectly suitable for even the most torrential of downpours when piloting an R8.

Which are the (non-big-brand) wipers from ebay that someone on here gave rave reviews?
