5th gear is a common problem on some cars - Renaults and Toyotas had some g/b that suffered from it.Have you checked the fluid?

linkages look fine so just presume its the box, so off to the breakers again see what they sting me for one :? did get 500 notes off it though

It's only doing it on deceleration? You were probably changing down anyway, feature not bug.

great for fuel efficiency when going downhill :?

I got a B5 Passat TDi last week and so far been really pleased with.Got 300 miles so far to 1/2 a tank of diesel averaging 52 mpg which I'm pleased with, Was getting 300 miles to a tank of petrol and 23 mpg in my old Mondeo ST24.

Meh!Live with it.Or use your knee to hold the gearlever in place - worked on our old VSU tranny

I have to say it doesn't seem like a major issue to me either. I had a Nissan Primera TD once which popped out of 5th on acceleration, which was far more annoying. You could put it into 5th on the overrun and it'd stay there quite happily, but as soon as you touched the throttle out it would pop, and no amount of pushing on the gearlever would keep it in - it just made nasty grinding noises. Ended up putting the old crate through the local auction and losing a shedload.

If it's the blue Passat you posted a picture of in another thread, that's a B4 rather than a B5 - pretty sure the engine/box is transverse in a B3/B4 and went back to north-south in the B5, so might make a difference when sourcing a replacement.

no its east west :)

that's the car, don't mind tackling the gearbox on it long as it plays ball

^^^ Thassa B4, innit  Wonder if a 'box from a Mk3 Golf would suit, probably more widespread...

plenty of them here, they love the TDi lump 8) sure the gearbox should be the same :)

Change the box oil, may have the incorrect stuff in it if its had a back street garage clutch at somepoint.
