Citroen bx owners

Have any bx owners found cheap classic car insurance. If so with whom and what restrictions imposed. Lancaster have quoted a ridiculous 800 quid odd. Are the rear arm bearings a diy job for someone have competent with spanners? What are the major rust areas to check for? Possible going to view a 17td later this week.

No but to insure a BX on a non classic policy cost me literally half that a ZX cost, with the same mileage too.

B pillars, inner wings, rear wheel arches, boot floor all like to rot. No idea about DIY though....

Peter James have always come up trumps for me insurance wise but I've always had at least one 70's heap to multi car with.

The biggest grot spot to check for is the rear subframe mounting points, which are difficult to check without dropping the fuel tank first. Then there are the various other places mentioned above. Estates will tend to be more rust-prone than saloons but overall I don't think BXs are too bad compared to many of their contemporaries.

I'd say rear arm bearings are easy enough to do if everything comes apart easily, which wasn't the case on mine. There's a full guide on the BX Club Forum here which should prove useful.

As far as insurance goes I can't really offer any helpful suggestions, as I couldn't find any insurance that was less than extortionate due to where I live and my age.

+1 for Peter James

Think it was about £180 for a dodgy london postcode

I've never had any trouble insuring BXs as classics, with a couple of different insurers.

Quick tip for an easy way to check the rear subframe - use a screwdriver to remove the bits of trim either side of the rear seat.

Early in my time here I was considering the autoshite bike bx, I found insurance without business cover very cheap but adding business cover made it ludicrously expensive. They must have a slightly odd risk profile, 'because French' :-)

Your right about the cheaper to insure than a zx. got some very reasonable quotes for normal insurance. now if i could just get the chap to answer his messages a project bx diesel might be mine!

My XM was cheaper on a normal policy than a proper classic policy.

Just over £200 fully comp for the year, limited to a generous 6000 miles.

I think I know the BX you're on about. I was hoping to buy it but needed a car quick. It's white with a knackered drivers seat?

Make sure it's a really got a turbo as it looks like an n/a with that interior. Also looks like a fair bit of work to get it sorted - my honest advice would be to find a sorted one and pay the extra.

FWIW it costs me a grand a year to insure a BX as a daily, but about £140 on a classic policy with limited mileage

yes thats the one, have you viewed it?

No, I spoke to him on the phone though. It sounded like a decent car but it just took too long to get a reply.

Looks like a turbo engine, it comes up as a turbo on all number plate searches. I'm after a project so a bit of work is fine by me and decent bx's are well out my price range.

Yes he is certainly hardwork to deal with seeing as he wants to sell it. hopefully viewing it tomorrow night.

I'm hopeful of getting it, just need a diesel estate next. Either a zx or a xsara preferably. Have found a Citroen van locally and was surprised to find i could find van insurance cheaper than car insurance.

Hi

I have both my GS and BX on the same classic policy. The policy is with Footman James and costs £180 per year. That covers myself and my good lady with a6000 mile restriction, so really 3000 miles per car.

My Alfa in comparison, is covered by Adrian Flux and costs the same!

Mine's with one of the mainstream insurers, via a comparison website. It was about 250 fully comp, with mileage restriction of 8000.

That's probably all irrelevant though, cos you're probably not the same age as me, with a different driving record and different postcode!

47 years old, with a dodgy cv6 coventry postcode, no points, accidents, convictions. With it on a new standard car policy starting afresh its £346. Phonecall with owner today and its provisionally sold to me with collection on friday! Will take it off the road and sort it out over spring and get it re mot'ed. Pictures hopefully on friday.
