320touring Posted May 13, 2017 Author Posted May 13, 2017 Pooma 1/4 is around that I think. I think starlet was much more I'm hoping to improve a couple tenths on the Octy as the fabia is much lighter fiatdaft 1

320touring Posted May 13, 2017 Author Posted May 13, 2017 Home made exhaust, generic map, roof rack, towbar and wheel trims! Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkCool cool. Mine is totally standard Elegance spec, so hauling about air con n heated seats;) My homebrew remap will get tested tomorrow I'll map it after a few stock runs to get the baseline down.. fiatdaft 1
320touring Posted May 14, 2017 Author Posted May 14, 2017 How did it do? Well, stock it ran 17.59 seconds (vs 18.001 that the Octavia managed) so a good 4 tenths quicker in stock trim. The decent Dunlop's and traction control are a boon for getting off the line. We put a map on - only a tenth quicker.. WTF?? Turns out there are 5! Smoke limiter maps, and my software was only showing me one- the one for -20 starts.. This meant that at operating temp, the car was reading a stock smoke limiter map. A swift copy/paste saw significant progress:) Upshot of this was a 16.921- much better but still not right. CreepingJesus, The Moog, fiatdaft and 1 other 4
fiatdaft Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 Close! Well done on the improvements, I have no smoke at all, need to have a look at that Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 320touring 1

Well done on the improvements, I have no smoke at all, need to have a look at that Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkRaced another estate with PD150 turbo, bigger injectors etc who was running 15.5ish before it proper carked it. Also had a bit of a go at a yellow Vrs too.. For a £400 beater mapped at £0cost during my lunch break its not too bad. I reckon the map could give more though;) fiatdaft 1
fiatdaft Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 Excellent! They are very underrated cars I think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
320touring Posted May 14, 2017 Author Posted May 14, 2017 Excellent! They are very underrated cars I think. Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkI think the Octavia is a better car- the Fabia is a bit tiny for most things. I reckon some decent shocks/springs and some MOAR BOOST could be good CreepingJesus 1
CreepingJesus Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 Maybe the Elegance is tad over specced for that. Something boggo would definitely be lighter, and that's free tenths off! How much can you remove before they twig it's not a stocker any more?!

How much can you remove before they twig it's not a stocker any more?!See there's the rub- it SHOULD be quicker than the Octavia ever managed as its 100kg lighter. Even with my heated seats and aircon! I shall send the map to the tame Boostwrangler* and see what I've missed. Re keeping it looking stock, that shouldnt be too difficult... CreepingJesus 1

320touring Posted May 17, 2017 Author Posted May 17, 2017 Bearing in mind I've schlepped 12000miles on this in 6 months, and all its had is 1 service, 2 fuel filters and a couple of tyres I thought I better show it some love. Today, I cracked out the Vactan and the drill, having at the copious quantities of surface rust to be found at the lower extremities of the car. I did the passenger side first, as it was the better of the two (All being relative!) If I'd found holes on this side, then there was no way I'd be attempting to get it through an MOT in Sept. Luckily it appears solid:) Each patch was stopped, treated with Vactan, and then primered with Poundshops finest.. Totally Giffer. I'll get some actual paint mixed shortly and tidy it up- the key thing was getting it stripped and protected Rear Arch First. Back of the Sill Front of the Sill And here it is in all its glory! Lacquer Peel 1
Split_Pin Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 The only thing more giffer than overspray on mudflaps are David's fibreglass repairs 'smoothed' into them! Seriously though it looks like you have caught it. I'm going to get one of those narrow band sanders that get into small spaces and do a few bits on the Megane. The dremel is far too aggressive.
Hendry Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 Seems all these modern-ish VAGs are bad for lower surface rust but appear solid when you grind it back, I have the same as you on both rear ends of the sills, and i also had the same front wing rust before I got them replaced under 12year anti corrosion guarantee, I can say with all certainty that the front wing rust at least has been caused by the mudflaps, all cars like mine ive seen without mudflaps are fine there, the ones which had mudflaps as mine did have the same grotty wings. Behind the arch liners might be worth a look, mines covered in surface rust there as well and a tonne of mud trapped behind them all, particularly the rear ones. Any damage rusts easily, some berk has jacked my car on all 4 corner on the sills rather than jacking points, cracked the paint and its rusted already, most other cars dont rust when that happens. VW mustve got their steel from the same place Lancia got theirs from in the 80s, havent seen anything else rust as bad as a modern VAG other than Fords for a long time!
