Hmm fresh fuel and fully primed it's still a no go. Methinks this one is buggered.

Ok so I took the stop solenoid out to see if the plunger moved freely and managed to bleed a load of air out in the process, but still no joy starting.

I've rebled the injectors and resorted to squeezing some fuel down each of the cylinders, this caused the engine to run for a second then die, so I suspect that the pump has gone for a burton.

what are the feed 'IN' pipes looking like into the pump? had a similar 'not catching , wont stay goin' on a mk1 golf 1.6d that had sat up for 7 years, I had tried over n over to start it; filling the newly bought filter with automatic transmission fluid,,, I was about to give up on it, n the uncle called around for a visit 'randomly'...

...a part time farmer - more used to tractor n farm machine fettling -his diagnosis was the clear 'in' pipe from filter to pump had shrunk with age/was brittle/pin-holed - I was sceptical, but left him off with a Stanley knife n some fuel hose n some jubilee clips n he had it going 10 mins later, after a crank open of the 4th injector, n it stayed running even on the old 7 year old diesel that was in the rusty tank - ran well up to temp... his theory over coffee is that broken down or pinholed old lines suck in so much air with the diesel, the seals in the pump 'go' when its been sat up so long...

Any bubbles in clear section of fuel pipe, caused by seals failing after using veg oil ?

Posted

No veg used here ever, just a really long lay up. The general consensus is that something inside the pump is seized or s5uk so it won't build any pressure.

Anyone need any 106 parts?

I think our Will has a spare Lucas pump off a 1.5...

Otherwise, I'd love the steering wheel if it's still round with no lumps missing.

I had the 1.5 version of this way back in 1998 when it was 3 years old, took gold on podium finish of worst ever bought/owned cars, a hideous thing.

Still, unparalleled economy but no other redeeming features.

Crankshaft oilseal failed on the m4 between Bridgend and llantrisant, under warranty so happy days.

INCORRECT.

They refused payout, sat in the garage in disputed for 3 years, got a scrapper engine 2 years later from a dubious source, went back to garage, car scrapped.

So for me bad £4000 memories.

But don't let that put you off of course.

Break it for spares and forget about the whole sorry experience, buy a VW td or even a fiesta td and be happy in your turbocharged 70mpg goodness.

Plus 85 mph is the v max on these flat out downhill, and you can get the tank from empty to full with mildly enthusiastic cornering.

* starts looking on eBay/gumtree etc

If it's anything like TUD5s, the valve seats like to recede into the head. Needs a re-shim as the gaps all close up making it a pig to start. Check the clearances.

Posted

The tud3 didn't suffer the same valve receding issues, it's certainly a fuelling problem.

It's not seen the road in a long time, there is rust in the boot and the brakes are shite, oh and all the lacquer has escaped from the roof. Not really worth the effort if we are being brutally honest.

I'm still a bit stung that having done a lot of work on a worthwhile vehicle (the proton) that I cannot shift it. So I won't be going down that rabbit hole for something that is worth sod all even in running order.

have you tried towing the twunt round the block?

Posted

Frankly Frank, although the idea of that crossed my mind, the Peugeot's brakes are so shit I'd be worried about ploughing it into the tow vehicle if it did decide to go.
