Ford Mondeo 1.8 For Sale

I never thought I would get like this but I have a little "awww" moment with these 90s/00s Fords.

I know it's an old cliche but they have everything* you want/need and nothing you don't - except possibly rust resistance.

You wonder about "progress" from here - the remote keys still work, 16 years later.

The Disco 3 ones are recharged by an induction loop near the ignition switch.  After 10 years, they are buggered, and I mangled one of my two changing the (non replaceable - in theory) batteries (you have to solder them to a tiny PCB).  So now I only have one working one and LR want £150+ for a new one.  The functionality is no better than the Mondy/Puma keys.

The car drives nicely, rides nicely apart from that odd yaw which I will track down one day and is very minor.

It has a good radio - although it does that unique Ford thing of the time where it gives you an occasional blast of another station as it retunes on the RDS.  I wonder who signed that off as OK - I have had it on pretty much every one from this period.

The ergonomics are great though - decent size dials, decent size radio controls, everything just falls to hand.

It's very quiet and smooth - a couple of times at traffic lights I thought it had stalled, the tickover is that quiet.

The headlights are good - it is from that pre-stealth lights period where manufacturers were still making the lights a decent size not feeling they had to hide them away as tiny as possible - the dipped beam lights are as good as any I've had on a car with Halogen lights - with the possible exception of when I put two brand new headlights on my old Saab 9000.

Heated screen is a boon, even on these pre-frosty days - 5 minutes has it clear of that overnight mist/condensation.

Happy at 30ish in a built up area, just as happy at 85 on the Motorway - and economical, spacious - what's not to like about these?

Sounds ideal. Do these have much in the way of engine management?

Depends what you mean by much (!).

It has single* point injection, uses an ECU and what looks as if it could be a wasted spark ignition- no dizzy, but HT leads not coilpacks on top of the plugs.  There is an oxygen sensor in the downpipe (may be another after the cat) so it looks like a closed-loop system.

* ha ha no it doesn't - I am talking bollocks again

I love these old Mondeos, I've had a few now and they always feel just "right" when behind the wheel.

I can see myself buying one as a weekend toy in 10-15 years time when they have gained classic status and are collectable.

Is it tragic that when my old lade asked me what i wanted for my 28th birthday (bless)

£350 Red 1.8 pez mondeo was my reply

Im really warming to the MK1/MK2 Mondeo shape and they seem to be thinning out now, Gaffer taped bumper spec* ones are getting few and far between.

Well bought AMC.

Multipoint in Mondeos I think. Spi tended to be on older cars that had a manifold originally designed for carbs, Astra Family 4 engine, 1.1 sohc Ke series etc

I think most cars had multipoint injection by the late 90s. Good purchase!

Er yes, multipoint no idea where I got that from - brain failure apologies.

Although it looks as if they may have used single point on older Foci.
