I'm extremely pleased this sold, but also extremely hopeful that swmbo has a drastic change of heart and it requires a new buyer. That buyer would be me. Why do I always miss these?

This.

Why, oh, why, have I not shifted my lazy arse and got the presidential Renner fixed, mot'd, roffled and gone?

I so want an XM RIGHT NOW!

Well done to Mr _Sir, for not being lazy, nor being put off by a slightly lukewarm reaction from SWMBO, and figuring out a cunning plan to get the booty home. Bon voyage

Stop fretting about the suspension. It's as reliable as hydraulic brakes - let pipes corrode out and you'll have to replace them. It's just that Hydractive cars (the ones which alter boith their spring and damper rates according to driving style/road have rather a lot of pipes, so grease them all up, if not already done.

Just as a master cylinder goes once in a blue moon in a normal braking system, so does a hydraulic pump on the later cars (plastic innit). I'd suggest changing the LHM every 3 years, unless you're covering 50k a year. It takes about half an hour to do, including cleaning the filters - it's all self-bleeding, bar the blind brake lines obviously. Worst thing about an ancient or starship mileage one which is treated as a banger and neglected is the odd seepage from a perished and hidden rubber return. Usually a 25 minute job, including finding it.

Neglected systems which haven't seen an oil change in 20 years may suffer from clogged height correctors and weeping doseurs, but that wouldn't be any worse financially than the routine rear caliper replacement on VAG.

Drive the thing, and drive it fast. Carry three quarters of a ton in the back and be amazed as nothing changes, except the acceleration. Drop the suspension and  raise to couple up to a trailer using nothing stronger than your little finger. Tow a trailer and suffer the ignomies of steel springs trying (and failing) to bounce the back of the car about. Wonder why other traffic slows when conditions deteriorate. Out-corner sports cars, run it on free fuel and spend the savings on taking your partner out for dinner. Top buyage, they_all_do_that_sir.

Perhaps. What engine is it?

I had a strut return pop off my xm 20 minutes into an mot once... The hose had perished and snapped on the end of the ripe, so after a discussion about 'its not oil, its lhm', and the guy testing it did something else whilst I cleaned up the puddle of fluid, pulled the tiny stub of pipe off the bracket and pushed the hose back on. Job done!

Oh, I wouldn't be in the running for this if it was still available next week!  :D

I should have dealt with the Renner months ago. And it'll probably be months before I get round to dealing with it. THEN I can start mooning over XMs

(This however has not stopped me fapping about a crippled MOT-less green VSX in Scottish land, overpriced at £350

Well done for buying this and saving many of us from certain doom. If you ever grow bored however...

In all honesty Hydro Citroëns are fabulously addictive and no harder to look after than anything else of it's age or class. I was a bit frightened of it on the Xantia but it's just old car stuff like perished rubber piping etc. That's caused any problems

Enjoy it, there's nothing quite like them.

I've wanted a proper Citroën for quite some time, and recently I've hankered after a period towcar for my 90s caravan so there is no way I could have said no. Then with it being in Liverpool where my wife resides during the week it was clearly some sort of sign from the Citroën gods....

This will be a genuine second car - we have the 307, I've the motorbike for commuting and there's a Ford ranger at work for business use so the XM should lead an easy life with me.

Once it's home I'll spend a bit of time sorting the water leak and use it for commuting duties for a short stint to get to know it.

We are already near the end of caravan season but once the XM is leak free and running happily I'd like to squeeze in one weekend away somewhere not too far away.

I'll probably look at tidying the lacquer peel on the cheap - I've had reasonable success before by flattening back and spraying a couple of coats of aerosol lacquer, depending on how much actual paint is still there.

But for now I'm happy enough just concentrating on getting the thing home!

You say all this, but once the xm is running right I bet you use it more than the 307!

Can you get filtered used veg oil in Ireland?

Will this nom the veg safely? I'll have to ask around....

I think so, sure I heard Bosch mentioned, plus dollywobbler ran his 2.1td XM on veg for a while

I'd get the other bits fixed first though, plus with winter coming you may as well wait until next year.

No that's the plan, I can maybe dabble with veg next year. Tbh I'd always fancied making my own but there's a fair bit of work involved building the plant and producing the fuel
