More MG Rover lusting by me

Ive stroked my MG Rover lust again with another unwise purchase.

Picked up last week.. a ZT 190 with the KV6 lump and 86k from new, ten months ticket and surprisingly FSH up til 71k. Cost me 425 quid.

Im quite impressed so far, its averaging about 27mpg round town and 32 on motorways when i use the cruise control which seems pretty reasonable.

Anything I need to look out for with these? Ive had a ZT before but it was in cdti flavour so the V6 is all new to me.post-212-0-52747900-1472331778_thumb.jpgpost-212-0-15064200-1472331993_thumb.png

VIS motors on the inlet manifold/butterflies on the intake 'trumpets'.

Usual fan woes.

Rear upper arms rotting through.

Shorten airbox intake and they shriek. Lovely.

Cheers Rob... I sold your Calibra on a few months back, but its gone to a dyed in the wool calibra pervert, and I see it running around locally regularly.

It did get a minor prang, but only to the wing which was duly replaced. Cracking car, I couldnt fault it - just fancied a change.

Fair do, you kept it a lot longer than I did! Is it a case of cambelt roulette on the ZT, or has it been done?

Kept the calibra about a year which is a long time by my standards!

Cambelts been done at 62k so I can rest easy on that front. I still have the ZS as well although i'll be sticking it on gumtree shortlypost-212-0-07024700-1472335098_thumb.jpg

Thats a bargain at £425, well done. And it has the proper Rover KV6 lump for extra win rather than the diesel engine version.

Just check the plenum drainage holes are clear as these blocking up with crap and debris can cause issues, especially for the ECU housed in the NS plenum. A long pipe bending spring is ideal for pushing these through to clear.  Sometimes the boots leak badly but my old W reg is dry as a bone, just have a look in the spare wheel well under the boot floor. Hopefully it'll be dry and dusty down there.

The temp guage on these are useless, they sit in the middle between 70*c and 120*c, you can monitor the actual coolant temp by doing the below;

*Hold in the trip mileage reset button until the display clears

*then press the button 19 times until you get to 'number 19' on display

*then the screen will flick between OFF and ON

*With OFF displayed press the button once

*Then press the button in 7 times until you get to '7'

*Hey presto there is your actual coolant temp, ideally between 90*c and 96*c

Check your fan is working, it should have a 2 speed fan operation, if you look through the grill you will see a silver or gold resister at 2 o clock (the fan being the clock face) you can check this is working on the lower speed with the engine running from cold press the demist button (air con switched off) and your lower speed fan should kick in, fingers crossed.

Same as what has been said. If the fan is fooked you can get upgraded ones from the forum folk. It's not a huge faff to do it yourself. easier with a mate in tow.

Belts?

Lovely engine, lovely car.
