Popular Post wuvvum Posted August 27, 2016 Popular Post Posted August 27, 2016 I am at Kings Lynn auction. It is the day after pay day. Whoops. michael1703, Jim Bergerac, The Moog and 54 others 57
purplebargeken Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Excellent. I know people who have spares for these and the knowledge. A most wonderous buy. Did you get or ??
purplebargeken Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Nice brown 55 saloon, 850N and 1500TC in there too. The 2 dafs are no reserve.
wuvvum Posted August 27, 2016 Author Posted August 27, 2016 55 saloon wouldn't start though. Trabby was rough and 1500 had no test so the white Daf was the one to go for I reckon.
Shep Shepherd Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Just goes to prove that Daf is unavoidable Looking forward to further jottings about the car.
Sigmund Fraud Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Great work ! This forum needs more DAFs !
wuvvum Posted August 27, 2016 Author Posted August 27, 2016 Further jottings: it won't change gear. Bollocks. Any ideas? The hill hold light is going off as expected but the ratio isn't changing.
purplebargeken Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 The brown 55 would have been worth it as the values are booming even as a FTP! Triumphs are easy to fixerate!
purplebargeken Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 It doesn't change gear, it should be a continous thing, once you get to speed, ease off on the throttle slightly and it'll go into an almost OD situation. purplebargeken Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Get it over to Essex this weekend for the annual Essex Daf bank holiday weekend thing. There's cake! I'm going on Monday. eddyramrod 1
trigger Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 I can't help with the gear change but that looks great!, I didn't know the auctions were on today or i liked to have gone up.
purplebargeken Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Please tell me you started it in gear didn't you. Never do it any other way. To put it in reverse, keep the footbrake on, blip the throttle gently then ram it into reverse. Sounds brutal but that how it is. Sheefag 1
trigger Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 I've just spotted which one it is, i hope you have more luck than most the other cars that came out of that place... dollywobbler, Magnificent Rustbucket and oldcars 3
dollywobbler Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Ace! As mentioned, the engine will rev at the same speed right up until the moment you lift off the throttle. They are most odd things to drive. I still want one (preferably flat twin though).
Sigmund Fraud Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Yeah, as Ken has said, you won't be able to feel any gear changes. Once the (centrifugal) clutch has fully engaged, you basically floor the throttle and bear with the deafening engine noise until you get to the desired speed. You can then gently reduce pressure on the throttle, which makes the transmission gradually shift up. Don't touch the hill hold button, unless you're going down a very steep hill (in fact, leave well alone even if you are !).
wuvvum Posted August 27, 2016 Author Posted August 27, 2016 No, the engine doesn't rev at the same speed. Revs go up and down with road speed, like a normal gearbox in 1st. At 20 its doing about 4000 revs.
dollywobbler Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 I've since seen the fact it's ex-Stondon. Oh dear. I have no idea what actually controls the pulleys. Pure centrifugal force? DAF Owners Club are a nice bunch if you need assistance.
purplebargeken Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 In the engine bay there are various rubber hoses going into a white plastic housing. Sometimes the vacuum hoses can leak. Might be worth a check. Sig can you think of anything else. Wuv, if you could get it to Essex over the weekend it can be gone over by Experten. Price: many cups of tea,
Sigmund Fraud Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 They do seem to rev far too much to begin with, but maintain steady pressure on the throttle and the car should keep accelerating. Even if the vacuum system is leaky, you still have centrifugal weights in the transmission that would cause it to eventually shift up. Ken's suggestion of a visit to DAF Mecca is probably worth it - all of Britain's DAF know-how will be gathering there this weekend !
purplebargeken Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Not immediately helpful but perhaps useful further on. http://www.dafownersclub.co.uk/volvo-66--340.html
purplebargeken Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Seriously. If you can get it to the Daf weekender, there is free advice and bloody cheap spares available, when I mean spares, there is almost anything. Very cheap.
wuvvum Posted August 27, 2016 Author Posted August 27, 2016 Its definitely not shifting up. I've had a Daf before, as well as various other CVT cars, I know how they're supposed to work. I did press the hill hold switch when I was first sitting in the car, to see if it did anything. Don't know if it might have got stuck on - are they a solenoid on these?
wuvvum Posted August 27, 2016 Author Posted August 27, 2016 Seriously. If you can get it to the Daf weekender, there is free advice and bloody cheap spares available, when I mean spares, there is almost anything. Very cheap. That would be great but Essex is a bloody long way at 20 mph... Station, oldcars and Magnificent Rustbucket 3
purplebargeken Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Ah ok. Didn't know you were a previous daf licker. Found this: its a possibility that the diaphragms are torn i have only ever had one 66 where they have not failed. it was a common problem due to a design fault.Remove both of the pipes from the EMV which is located on the bulkhead, remove the two pipes that go off under the car, blow into the one nearest to you and NO air should come out of the other pipe, it should feel like blowing up a balloon, when you stop you should get air come back out of the same pipe you blew into. Also check that the micro switch is working on the carb, turn the ignition on and move the throttle connection on the carb, you should hear a click on the EMV, the same applies when you turn on the low hold or press the brake pedal, if you cant hear it from inside the car the take a connection from the brake light switch on the master cylinder and joint it to the other which will activate the circuit.Check the fuses, as i remember the EMV uses one of them. The other issue could be fuel evaporation, a loose connection on the fuel cut out solenoid, a bad mixture setting. poor points and condenser, static timing issues. Sheefag 1
purplebargeken Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Have sent a text to Daf owning mate. Hang on.
wuvvum Posted August 27, 2016 Author Posted August 27, 2016 AA/RAC? I did think about that but it was last taxed in 1999 so AA might think I was taking the piss. michael1703 1
