Ford Fusion

An elderly relative is looking for a new car looking to spend a grand or so to replace a dead Corsa 1.7d. I'd suggested a Fusion as they're easy to get in and out and, ideal for the dog has a low boot lip. Plus they are hopelessly unfashionable so prices should be cheap. I've never had any dealings with them oddly enough for a Ford. Any advice or is it the usual check for smoky 1.6s and screen wash pissing all over the plugs?

Most gripes people have are lack of oomph. This is genuinely not a concern.

I've had mine two years. Front springs snap, windscreen washers leak on to the engine as you say, but most will be sorted by now.

The same as the Fiesta it's worth buying a little kit off eBay to stop the clutch pedal suddenly disconnecting! Check the heated front screen of course.

Reliable car, but no way a motorway cruiser due to road, wind and engine noise.

Easy access and low boot are great.

Mine is 1.6 petrol. Avoid the durashift auto. I'd go for another petrol as average over 40 mpg easily.

No surprises there then. Should be business as usual engine wise then. Corsa failed test on Spring Hangers. Big time! Shame as rest of the car was good but welding that up would be a right cunt of a job.

Get a facelift model if poss I think. The + model runs on 16 inch, but mine is on 15s.

My Dad had one a few years ago, was a 1.4Tdi plus model.

Think it was a ford press car as had every option going, including a rear passenger DVD player in the roof and wireless headphones. Also had a stupid box thing that you could fit between the rear seat to convert to two seats with cubby hole.

Dad loved his, but was a car you sat on rather than in. Seats gave no support at all.

As said before, higher up and quite a deceptive boot so quite practical.

I'll still go for a Honda Jazz though.

Yeah that stupid box thing was a total marketing fail, Ford thought this was a car for young upwardly mobile people. In fact, it is a baby boomer special. Knocking 40, l'm a young Fusion owner.

I've never seen anyone say it is a better car than the Jazz.

Mine has classic ongoing minor water leaks in true zetec/duratec style.

Clutch squeal is common, but mine has got no worse over 2 years and 11,000 miles.

Central locking problems are common, mainly due to sensors on the doors. Had to get my nearside door open indicator bypassed by an auto electrician.

There are two of these on my road, both grey pre-facelifts.

AFAIK neither have caused any issues at all. One is owned by an elderly lady that seems to like it, the other is owned by a guy that got sick of repairing/fuelling his 4.6 P38 Range Rover so bought the Fusion as a back up. That Fusion sees a fair bit of use....

There's also the contemporaneous Mazda 2 - pretty much the same car (and engines) underneath I think. Like Fusion, has a low tailgate and slightly higher seating position. Mrs Alusilber has had a 1.4 diseasel one for the 9 years, only real probs have been the injector seals leaking a bit, and the gear linkage getting stiff when hot (easy fix for that). The front springs also go ping every so often.

My girlfriend has a Zetec. A 1.4 I think? Seems ok, on and off the motorways. She uses it to move her drum kits around.
