Didn't take any appliances as they are cheap enough over here. I cheated and got the Granada transported to Mrs Seal and I could share driving the bus

I paid over £2k for a weeks holiday this summer, puts it into perspective a bit.

What are the rates/ utility costs like a month?

Posted

There is no standing charge and the costs for electric and water are about half of that in the UK.

Council Tax is about £15 a year, Annual Taxes are approx £60-£120 a year. A years insurance for the Granada is £50

That's insane......although again all relative to the average income. You can see why a lot of people emigrate to the UK for a few years and send money home....

If I could afford to work term time I'd love to have somewhere like this to spend a few months over the year getting the head showered

Wow, it does sound exciting. Did you visit a lot before you bought?

Posted

No, we did loads of research online and spoke to friends who'd moved from Shetland. Narrowed it down to 4 properties and got a recommended English builder to visit all 4 for us and give us an honest comprehensive assessment. Bought this and the first time we saw it in person was after the 4-day, 2,200 mile trip :-D More than happy with it. We are getting the damp proofing, guttering and downstairs floors redone as well as new uPVC windows and doors over the next 6 months ready for coming back next year. That lot will cost us approx £2,000

We did it slightly differently

Poured over various Bulgarian estate agents whilst researching the area we wanted to live in

Flew.in for a weeks holiday during which we got ferried around by a driver

We ended up looking at over 20 properties over 3 days, before settling on the 1 we wanted

Holy crap.

I love Eastern European folklore/culture.
I was considering buying in a city.

If you want these as a holiday home, how safe are they when you're not there?

Posted

Our Bulgarian neighbours are great and will be holding keys and keeping an eye on the place for us. We've been told that the houses likely to be targeted by theives are those on the edge of the village and it's usually either gypsies or English who are responsible.

Hmm, 2200 miles isn't that bad of a commute really? Really?

Does anyone on autoshite have Scottish Power for their electric? I was living in Wyoming and they took over the local power company a few years ago. Someone from the UK wrote our newspaper and warned us they're a bunch of thugs. Said where he lives the power disconnect boxes are on the inside of the house and when you get behind on your bill they send a coupla fellows to your place to sledgehammer the door in to turn off your juice. Could that be true?

Quite the HQ in Bulgaria! I've always wanted to have a place in Romania, more castles and ruins and such. What are the charms of Bulgaria besides Ladas?

Posted

As Ken said, the feel of the place is very like rural France. The people are all welcoming and friendly. The scenery is fantastic, the weather superb and everything is cheap. We wanted somewhere that we can use as a holiday home for a few years and eventually retire to that wouldn't cost a fortune to live.

Used to.

"Thugs" would be an improvement in their levels of customer service.

Yes they can do a forcible entry to cut you off.

Not heard that particular story, but I can confirm that Scottish Power management ( upper, middle, and junior)are a shower of cunts, who rely almost exclusively on bullying to achieve their aims. I had the misfortune of having to do some work for them a few years back and with a few exceptions I found them to be a vile and loathsome bunch.

Anyway, breathe, .......Bulgaria looks ace!

Don't tempt me. I was gonna put down a deposit on a terrace in Nottingham, after all...

Bulgaria and Romania are both in the top ten for fastest Internet in the world. Like most things here, it's a country mile ahead of the UK.

Just think, like the place you've got now but abroad....with potential for lots of parking space.

I'm tempted.

So whilst back this time we are getting the corner of the perimeter wall rebuilt along with a driveway put in down the side of the barn. The half fallen down hay store in the picture is being rebuilt and a car port added onto the side so I can move the Granada from the open barn and still have it under cover plus room to work on it. Then work can commence on the open barn to turn it into a massive living room.17447b11adc857b487c7edb640438bc1.jpg

AS retirement village, Shitest Exotic Generic Rubber Glove Motel; the numbers probably add up although the name definitely needs work.
